16 Guns Recovered After Murder-Suicide Claims Four Lives

I’ve never quite understood the whole murder-suicide thing, with the exception of something like the end of The Mist. That one, I get. Beyond that? It’s never made a lick of sense. While I don’t condone it, I can at least understand wanting someone else dead. I understand being convinced the world is better off without you, even though that’s almost never true.
But at least anti-gun states like California don’t have to worry about someone having a number of guns they can use in a murder-suicide, right? I mean, even if it doesn’t make sense, at least gun control prevents those people from having firearms.
Oh, wait, it doesn’t.
Investigators found 16 guns including two pistols believed to have been used by a man who fatally shot his wife and their two children, then turned the gun on himself, in a murder-suicide inside the family’s Rancho Cordova home.
Detectives determined that David Vallerga, 58, committed Tuesday’s murder-suicide, killing a 49-year-old woman, a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday evening in a news release.
The news release marked the first time sheriff’s officials identified the gunman found dead in the two-story home in the 5400 block of Mill Water Circle in Rancho Cordova.
…
A neighbor reported hearing what sounded like gunshots and screaming. A few minutes later, a man, later identified as David Vallerga, called 911. Sheriff’s officials said Vallerga gave a dispatcher his home address and said he was “the shooter” and that he had installed “booby traps” inside the home.
Officers surrounded the two-story house and evacuated nearby residents after they heard what they believed was a single gunshot. Sheriff’s officials said they confirmed Vallerga had previous military experience and possessed numerous firearms.
Alright, enough being glib about this, because there’s no universe where I’m OK with someone not just taking their own life, but killing their wife and children, especially such young kids. This is beyond awful, and I really will be praying for the loved ones who remain. They’re going to be asking questions for the rest of their lives, I suspect, and there aren’t likely to be any sufficient answers for them.
However, let’s talk about gun control for a moment.
Advocates claim that gun control stops mass shootings, pedestrian murders, and suicides. They claim that the laws on the books in places like California are needed throughout the nation so that we see an end to awful tragedies like this one.
Only, they didn’t do that. They didn’t stop this.
Why?
Because no matter what you do, some people snap. We don’t understand fully why, but some people who are fine one day suddenly hit some kind of trigger that pushes them off the deep end, and they do awful things. If we’re very fortunate, it begins and ends with them, and the fact that I can call that being fortunate is truly sad.
The alternative is something like this, or something like the Route 91 shooting, or Parkland, or any of a number of other massacres that claimed innocent lives for no reason.
We can’t always tell who will end up broken. There’s no mechanism for looking into the future and deciding that someone is going to commit some atrocity at a later date. We have to operate on the “innocent until proven guilty” standard because that’s the fairest one we have, which means that nothing you can do will stop someone like this from breaking mentally and hurting people who deserve no such thing.
You’re never going to stop that from happening, even if guns vanished tomorrow.
The best you can do is to treat everyone like a responsible adult until they show you they’re not.
