A Film About Pain: Pro Skier Navigates Chronic Arthritis in ‘Mountain Joy’
Skiing can be nourishment for the soul, but it can also be brutal on one’s body. For years, pro skier Nat Segal was proud of her pain threshold and pushed its limits when she was skiing. But eventually, her pain became chronic, and she could not escape it.
Mountain Joy is a short film by Helle Hansen about Segal’s struggle. In it, she tells the story of her spondyloarthritis diagnosis and how it affected her life and career in the years that followed. She also gives us a little insight into how she was able to find hope in the darkest moments of her suffering.
