‘World’s Largest Hardshell Rooftop Tent’: Roofnest Condor 2 XXL Air Debut

Live large in a massive tent atop your vehicle. The new Roofnest Condor 2 XXL Air has 8 by 6.5 feet of mattress and over 4 feet of headroom inside. That’s a big tent!

In fact, Roofnest claims that it’s the “world’s largest hardshell rooftop tent.”

Besides being massive, the all-new Roofnest Condor 2 XXL Air also offers up a lot of great features in a package that is easy to deploy and stow. It will take up your entire roof and weighs in over 200 pounds, however. Although, it is the same footprint size (88″ L x 60″ W x 15″ H) as Roofnest’s largest clamshell RTT, the Falcon 3 EVO XL.

The company claims that this is the “fastest-deploying Roofnest ever.” That is accomplished with self-deploying rainfly U-Bars and an integrated ladder that assists with setup/breakdown.

An optional second ladder can also be added to this tent. This makes it much more usable for a big group of people, up to four adults.

A Tent Made for Adventure

A compounded — versus laminated with UV stabilizers — PC-ABS hardshell design should be pretty burly and resistant to sun damage over time. A LINE-X coating covers the shell, providing a super-durable matte finish.

“The best way to describe the toughness of the Condor XXL AIR’s shell is to take a car bumper, make it twice as thick, then cover it with LINE-X,” said Turner Sessions, Roofnest’s Director of Engineering. “Top-shell fatigue is also limited by the interior frame, which limits the stress on the shell but also offers customers the ability to install accessory cross bars on the Condor XXL AIR, which can hold up to 150 pounds of gear when the tent is closed.”

So yes, you can put roof bars on top of this tent to carry your kayaks, paddleboards, bikes, etc. But, note that these items will need to be taken off the tent before it can be deployed.

The tent is made of a thick, insulating, and fully recycled 280gsm tent material. It is also a blackout material, allowing you to sleep in a bit at camp. It, of course, also has huge windows with bug netting for optimal airflow.

Sleep Well

The tent has two 2-inch foam-core air mattresses that create a 51-square-foot sleeping surface — 8.0 feet long and 6.5 feet wide.

These mattresses are part of Roofnest’s new “Rest EZ Sleep System.” This system has fitted and top sheets made from 100% bamboo and a puffy blanket. The full Rest EZ Sleep System comes standard with the Condor XXL AIR, which is a great added value.

Cool and Hot Features

With a tent this big, which can hold so many people, it’s important to keep your gear organized when you’re inside. A six-pocket gear grid attaches to the top shell, which creates great vertical storage on a wall when deployed. Two additional three-pocket sets hang outside the tent, on both sides of the door.

Lighting such a big space can be a challenge as well, but Roofnest has outfitted this tent with three interior, dimmable LED lights.

But, if the moon is out or the stars are bright, turn off the LEDs and unzip the cover on the translucent moonroof. This big window on the roof of the deployed tent should be perfect for stargazing.

And, as with most new tents on the market, the Condor 2 XXL Air comes with HVAC ports. These holes allow you to control the air temp in the tent through the use of portable heaters and air conditioner units.
