Everytown’s “Train Smart” Mocked by NSSF

In a deservedly sarcastic piece of writing, the head of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) recently blistered so-called Everytown For Gun Safety’s brand new “gun safety training” initiative.

In a news item posted on the group’s website on August 18 titled “Cue the Clown Car: Everytown Gun Control Wants to Train Gun Owners,” Larry Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel, wrote about the rich irony of a group that’s never seen a gun control proposal it doesn’t like acting like it plans to train gun owners in safe usage—ironically the same gun owners the group wants to disarm.

“It would be easy to dismiss this as the stuff of comedy writers,” Keane wrote. “In fact, it was hardly believable until NSSF staff saw it with their own eyes at the recent National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) held in Boston, Massachusetts.”

As Keane pointed out, Everytown is a devoutly anti-gun group, not a moderate group that supports only a few limited reforms.

“Everytown is the same group that wants to ban guns, require firearm registries, permits to purchase a firearm, prohibit young adults from legally purchasing a firearm, enact waiting periods to take possession of legally-purchased firearms, keep guns under constant lock-and-key, restrict their use to designated areas and slap exorbitant taxes and fees just to purchase one,” he wrote. “This is the same group that tells people to bring up gun control as Thanksgiving Day conversation, like a nonchalant weather chat. In short, there isn’t a proposed barrier to lawful firearm ownership Everytown doesn’t support.”

Consequently, the fact that the group is now claiming it wants to train gun owners through its new “Train Smart” initiative is not only puzzling, but laughable. What do they want to train them to do? Turn them in at so-called gun “buybacks”? Or lock them up and throw away the key?

According to Keane, “Train Smart” is rolling out several segmented lessons, including “The Smart Guide to Buying a Gun,” which features a one-hour course for prospective gun buyers who “want the facts about gun ownership without a sales pitch.” The organization claims it will teach gun buyers about why people own guns, facts surrounding gun ownership, secure storage, protecting a home, “universal” guns safety rule and what to look for in a gun.

“This is the same group that preaches that guns are the root of all evil, claims that gun owners can’t really protect themselves and are actually at greater risk when a gun is in the home,” Keane points out.

In the news item, Keane blasts several different training objectives, including one called “Raise Standards in Your State” classes. That, of course, isn’t even an attempt to hide their efforts to convince people to press for permits and licenses, and instructor certifications, which amazingly can now be provided by the newest firearm training program in town.

“One can only guess that class will have lessons on how to properly dispossess oneself of Second Amendment rights,” Keane concluded. “Here’s a hint… you shouldn’t just dump a handgun (illegally purchased) om a trash can like Hallie Biden, Beau Biden’s widow who was dating Hunter Biden. That’s true no matter how much money Bloomberg and Everytown gave to Hunter’s father to push the most radical, antigun agenda yet.

“The whole thing is so bizarre that it couldn’t possibly be fiction. Honestly… you just can’t make this stuff up.”
