Did Jay Cutler Lose Gun Rights Over DUI Arrest? Not So Much

I don’t watch football like I used to, but I do remember Jay Cutler being a standout quarterback. He might not have been the best, but he really was good enough to build a franchise around, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Still, like all football players, he eventually retired and went about his merry way. Since then, he’s made it clear that when it comes to politics, his gun ownership isn’t just a case of “rules for thee, but not for me.”

However, he got in some hot water last year after being pulled over for DUI. He was arrested and faced multiple charges. This week, he entered into a plea deal that addresses the issue.

But man, the sports reporting on this is an absolute mess. I mean, did Culter lose his gun rights over this? Well, when the headline read, “Former NFL Quarterback Jay Cutler Gets 4-Day Jail Sentence for DUI, Loses Gun Rights,” one would assume.

And then we have this:

Jay Cutler is headed to jail after pleading guilty to drunk driving in Franklin, Tennessee. The former NFL star will spend four days in jail and pay $350 in fines following an October crash where he hit another car while driving drunk.

Police found weapons in his truck’s center console – a rifle and a loaded Glock. Before cops showed up, Cutler tried to pay the other driver $2,000 to keep the accident quiet.

Police found a rifle in the truck’s center console?

Hell, if that’s true, Cutler could solve the housing problems in this country since he can fit stuff in spaces it shouldn’t fit into.

Or, and this is a reach, the writer at Fox Sports doesn’t know what the hell they’re talking about on any of it.

I looked, and what happened was that the Glock was in the console. The rifle was in the truck.

Here’s what Fox News had to say about it:

Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler accepted a plea deal on Tuesday after being arrested for DUI last fall.

Cutler pleaded guilty to one charge of driving under the influence in a Tennessee courtroom, according to WSMV. The deal dismisses a weapon possession charge, though he must forfeit his gun.

Cutler must also spend four days in jail, which he will serve next month, and pay a $350 fine.

So no, he didn’t lose his gun rights over a DUI. That was just terrible journalism and a clueless editor, apparently.

Now, there are people who want this to happen. They want us to lose gun rights over a DUI arrest. They want to increase the number of offenses that result in people being prohibited from owning a gun to the point that literally no one would ever qualify, if they can figure out how to pull it off.

But Cutler just had to give up a gun that he was technically in possession of illegally in that moment.

Considering that he’s not broke, I think he’ll be able to replace that soon enough.

However, since his license was revoked, he’ll have to call an Uber. Then again, considering he got dropped as a spokesperson for Uber Eats because he wasn’t tripping over himself on COVID, he might want to use Lyft instead.
