Amidst multiple lawsuits and legislation targeting the sale of Glock pistols, the Austrian gunmaker is discontinuing production of most of its current models.
Several Glock distributors began reporting on Monday afternoon that the company will stop shipping all Gen 3, Gen 5, and Gen 5 MOS models as of November 30, and will roll out a new V Series in December of this year.
I first heard the report on Monday afternoon via a video from GlockShop’s Lenny McGill, who said he heard the “shocking” news from a “very reliable source.”
While the company hasn’t issued a formal press release on the changes, Glock’s website does confirm that the following models are being discontinued:

On the website, the gun maker said “to focus on the products that will drive future innovation and growth, we are making a strategic decision to reduce our current commercial portfolio. This streamlined approach allows us to concentrate on continuing to deliver the highest-quality and most relevant solutions for the market.”
Glock says it will continue to service discontinued models going forward, and that customers will “still have access to the most popular GLOCK models you know and love—just with a more focused selection.”

While the company hasn’t tied the discontinuation of so many models to the ongoing efforts by anti-gun politicians and the gun control lobby to ban the sale of all Glock handguns because of the growing use of illegal switches that convert the semi-automatic pistols into illegal machine guns, it certainly seems like a response to the legislative and litigious efforts to take Glocks off the shelves.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed AB 1127 into law, which will prohibit the sale of Glock handguns starting next year unless the company redesigns its Gen 3 models (which are the only models approved for sale in the state) to make it impossible to illegally convert the handguns into machine guns. Chicago, Baltimore, and Seattle are also suing Glock over the use of illegal switches, as are the states of Minnesota and New Jersey, where Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced his office was going after the gun maker just last week.
Will the move to discontinue most of their current inventory shield Glock from these efforts going forward? Honestly, I doubt it.
One of the claims made by the cities and states suing Glock is that the company was aware of the supposed ease of converting their products to full-auto and refused to make design changes to make it more difficult to do so. If Glock does roll out a new line of handguns that have been designed to make it harder or impossible to install an illegal switch, I suspect Platkin and others will simply argue that the move proves their point, and the company could have redesigned their products long ago.
The new design may have a bigger impact on legislative efforts targeting Glocks, however; not only in California, but in states like Illinois and New York where there are bills similar to AB 1127 that have yet to win final approval from lawmakers.
Either way, this is a major move by the gunmaker, and it will be interesting to see how both customers and critics respond to the changes in the weeks ahead.
