Yosemite National Park is most famous for El Capitan and Half Dome, but its animal residents deserve just as much attention. The area’s rich diversity of wildlife finally gets the spotlight in a new book: Yosemite Wildlife: The Wonder of Animal Life in California’s Sierra Nevada.
Published this week by the Yosemite Conservancy, it’s the first comprehensive book in more than a century dedicated to the park’s wild animals. The book includes gorgeous and adorable photographs of otters, owls, bears, and more animals from naturalist Robb Hirsch. Those images are paired with writing from conservation author Beth Pratt.
The coffee table–sized book includes more than 300 photographs of 150+ species in this stunning wilderness of the Sierra Nevada. It also tells “only-in-Yosemite” stories like black bears blocking traffic in “bear jams,” tiny amphibians persisting on the tallest peaks, and the peregrine falcons brought back from the brink of extinction in part by big wall rock climbers.
