Trump’s Budget Includes 2A Defense

With Pam Bondi out as attorney general, there are some who wonder just what the Department of Justice’s future will look like, especially in defense of the Second Amendment. On the one hand, the Civil Rights Division has focused on doing some good things. On the other, the DOJ has been defending federal gun control with a burning passion one would expect from someone like Joe Biden’s autopen.

What priorities will a new attorney general have?

President Donald Trump’s new budget has been released, and on Page 38, we’ve got this little tidbit:

Protects the Constitutional Rights of American Citizens (+$8 million).  The Budget afrms the President’s commitment to defnitively protect the Second Amendment and other constitutional rights of citizens.  This includes investing $1.4 million for a new ofce within the Civil Rights Division solely dedicated to protecting Second Amendment rights from unlawful infringement on the right to bear arms and pursuing cases to defnitively enshrine those rights in perpetuity, and $1.3 million to expand eforts to eliminate discriminatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs in public institutions.  The Budget also allocates $4.8 million for the Ofce[sic] of the Pardon Attorney’s Firearm Rights Restoration Initiative, which provides a pathway for law-abiding citizens to regain their Second Amendment rights after fulflling their obligations to the justice system.  The Budget continues to support the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) eforts[sic] to reverse regulations imposed by prior administrations that have efectively criminalized law-abiding gun ownership.  The previous administration used the ATF to attack gun-owning Americans and undermine the Second Amendment by:  requiring near-universal background checks; subjecting otherwise lawful gun owners to up to 10 years in prison for failing to register pistol braces that make it possible for disabled veterans to use frearms; the imposition of excessive restrictions on homemade frearms; and the revocation of Federal Firearms Licenses.  The Budget re-prioritizes resources toward illegal frearms trafckers fueling violent crime, such as MS-13 gang members.

In other words, imagine the Civil Rights Division as it stands now, only cloned and just focusing on Second Amendment issues from now until the end of time…or until anti-gunners get pissy and kill it.

Still, in the meantime, this is fantastic news, but only if this remains in the final budget. The budget process is long and annoying, and considering how Democrats seem able to shut down the government, even in part, whenever they want, and while this is probably not going to be the thing that they get their panties in a bunch over, you can bet your sweet bippy that they’re going to try to get that removed.

The thing is, it doesn’t need to be.

For generations, the Civil Rights Division protected literally every civil right vehemently, and for a good reason. They matter. They didn’t always get it right, in my opinion, but they still were trying to protect civil liberties, which is what matters. What bothered me, though, was how they consistently ignored the Second Amendment rights of Americans until this administration.

Having an office within the Civil Rights Division that does nothing but Second Amendment defense would be a nice change of pace. After all, we’re used to the government tripping over itself to help anti-gunners take away our rights, so it’ll be refreshing to see our tax dollars actually protecting the rights enshrined in the Constitution for a change.

When the budget fight starts in earnest, we’ve got a reason to get into it.

Editor’s Note: President Trump and Republicans across the country are doing everything they can to protect our Second Amendment rights and right to self-defense.
