How AI May Undermine Second Amendment Rights

While I use the term “AI” on a regular basis, I don’t really like it. What we have may look a lot like AI, but it’s really not. There’s no actual intelligence there. It’s just a program that makes a really decent search engine that has figured out how to seem convincing. There’s no real personality there or anything.
Still, it’s becoming the default for a lot of people on the internet with questions. We already know some of what’s happening with AI, such as school kids using it to write papers, or how it’s being used to replace artists and writers–that last one is a real issue for me, to be sure–and the list will likely continue.
It still can’t clean my house, but some are trying to replace me in my job with it. (Not Salem Media, that owns Bearing Arms, mind you, but others.)
However, because a lot of people use it as a search engine, we need to be concerned. Why? Because AI is anti-gun.
When America’s First Freedom writer Brian McCombie asked ChatGPT3.5, Claude, Gemini, Meta Llama2 and Writesonic if the NRA was a civil rights organization, all responded that the NRA didn’t fit the term’s racial equality, social justice or voting rights definitions. Claude went so far as to state, “No, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is not considered a civil-rights organization by most definitions and expert assessments,” McCombe reported in the article.
“Apparently, the right to defend oneself is not a civil right in the opinion of these five chatbots,” he noted. Eroding political support has serious consequences. So does dispensing misinformation.
Inaccurate Results
The Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) released its most recent findings on AI chatbot anti-gun bias in December 2025. Compared to CPRC’s findings roughly two years ago, things have gotten worse. The center’s report surveyed 13 chatbots. “Between our original survey in February 2024 and the latest survey in December 2025, the total scores became more liberal…,” it notes.
Nearly all AI systems tested incorrectly claimed Australia’s homicide rate dropped after its firearm confiscation. “However, as we have shown, Australia did not impose a complete ban on all guns or all handguns during the 1996–97 confiscation, and by 2010, gun ownership exceeded its level at the time of the confiscation,” the report states. “Moreover, as we have previously pointed out, analysts based the claim that firearm homicides fell on faulty statistics and total homicides actually rose.”
The pervasive misinformation could conceivably convince law-abiding citizens—particularly those relatively unexposed to firearms—not to purchase a gun for home and self-defense. Those who buy into the widely circulated “Down Under” myth are also more likely to endorse gun-control legislation at the polls.
Now, in fairness to these chatbots, what is generally happening is that they’re pulling information from the internet and distilling it down into a brief response to a query.
In a classic case of “garbage in, garbage out,” what we find is that a lot of times, they’re just regurgitating things they find on the internet, from mainstream media reports to even Reddit posts. Since many of these environments are heavily anti-gun, the AI chatbots become anti-gun, too.
Still, knowing why it’s happening shouldn’t give anyone the warm fuzzies. This isn’t new, and rather than addressing the issue, the companies behind these programs have just let it ride. They either don’t care or they think their chatbot is right, and thus it’s not a problem. Considering how Silicon Valley votes, I know which one I’m putting my money on. Either way, an untold number of Americans rely on AI programs to feed them information, especially these days when Google is absolute crap.
Garbage in, garbage out doesn’t just apply to computers, unfortunately, and with people getting garbage in from bad information via AI, they’re going to spew garbage out, both in their commentary online and in their voting patterns.
Technology is wonderful in many ways, and I wouldn’t trade many technological advances for anything, but this is something that’s going to keep me up at night.
