After a 7-month-old child was fatally shot in Brooklyn last week, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdami wasted little time in taking to the stump and politicizing the tragedy.
Rather than demand justice for the murder of Kaori Patterson-Moore or announce a crackdown on gang violence in the city, the far-left mayor instead demanded more be done to curb “gun violence.”

Mamdani’s comments were immediately criticized by New York City council members and many conservatives, who accused the mayor of politicizing tragedy.

In the days since Mamdani made those comments, police have made two arrests in Patterson-Moore’s murder, and neither one of them are inanimate objects. 21-year-old Amuri Greene has been charged with three counts of murder, while his alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez, who piloted the scooter the pair used as their getaway vehicle, was nabbed in Pennsylvania and was extradited back to New York City over the weekend.
According to Greene, his intended target was the infant’s father, who police say has an “association” with a Brooklyn gang.
Within hours of the shooting, detectives began working on the theory that the gunman was aiming at Kaori’s dad, who they believe has links to members of the Money Over Everything gang in the Bushwick Houses.
The gang, known as MOE, is in the middle of an ongoing dispute with a crew Greene is associated with from the Marcy Houses, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Thursday.
“We’re still looking into that,” Kenny said. “We know that he [Kaori’s dad] does have an association with some other (Money Over Everything) gang members. He is not in our criminal group database as an MOE member but based on the geography and where he was at the time, we are looking into that.”
Mamdani has had plenty of time to forcefully come out and condemn the gang members allegedly responsible this murder, and to announce a crackdown on the two warring gangs in Brooklyn, but he’s stayed quiet about the killing since his staff brought a podium to the Brooklyn neighborhood where Patterson-Moore was murdered so he could stage his statement about “gun violence.”
I don’t think Mamdani is interested in cracking down on gangs, to be honest. He’s taking a different approach to crime, as Deputy Mayor Renita Francois, who’s the head of the new Office of Community Safety, recently detailed.
[I]n Richmond, California, [there] is a community violence intervention program that’s evidence-based. It’s something that we could be doing. I know we have the crisis management system program, but this is really focused on training and workforce development. It provides technical assistance to the folks who are doing the CVI work and for the public sector partners like us. And it’s just a different take on gun violence prevention. Folks are doing plenty of good work like that in Albuquerque, Denver, Newark, Baltimore.
Look, I’m all for community-based violence intervention programs that are transparent and accountable. Many of them, though, are all carrot and no stick when it comes to dealing with the small number of individuals who are disproportionately responsible for violent crime. If these programs can get gang members to change their ways, great. But these programs don’t negate the need for serious consequences for violent crimes, and Mamdani hasn’t said or done anything to suggest he’ll get tough on violent criminals. Instead, by focusing on “gun violence,” the mayor has embraced the false premise that guns are the problem… not the people indiscriminately pulling the trigger of an illegally possessed firearm and taking the lives of innocent children like Kaori Patterson-Moore.
