As Another Would-Be Assassin Fails to Kill Trump, Democrats Calling for Gun Control. Again

If President Donald Trump hasn’t broken the all-time record for assassination attempts against him, he’s got to be close as the White House Correspondence Dinner, normally a time of the press thinking they still matter, the president playing along, and a lot of bad jokes by comedians who think they’re funny. Gunshots are usually not on the agenda.

Over the weekend, though, that changed, as I’m sure you’ve already heard.

A California man traveled to Washington, booked a room in the hotel where the dinner was at, thus allowing him inside the building, and tried to take out Trump and any other administration official that got in his sights.

He wasn’t successful.

We have a manifesto (more on that later today) stating why he wanted to kill Trump, and it’s the usual thing you hear from the left, so we know precisely what his motivations are, though some people think this was staged, because a long-time Democrat would conspire with the Trump White House to fake an assassination attempt that would hurt his side, ultimately benefit Trump, and not only did he agree with it, but the Trump administration didn’t kill their patsy who can could likely shatter the whole narrative.

Honestly, some people are pathetic, and they’re still better than those who mocked Erika Kirk for being upset at an assassination attempt in her presence, less than a year after her husband was assassinated.

Luckily, not every Democrat jumped on the “it’s a hoax” train, but what some of them are pushing is arguably even dumber. They’re trying to leverage this for gun control.

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said the shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner could be a moment of unity that brought universal background checks for gun ownership.

Raskin said, “But but we’ve not dealt with the problem. I mean, we’re losing, you know, thousands of people a year to gun violence. There are 100 people shot every day. So yesterday, while that nightmare was going on at the White House Correspondents’ ball, dozens of people had been shot across the country. And we just accept that as the normal course of business. So you know, I think before we get back to all the political divisions and fighting about stuff, maybe this could be a moment of unity for trying to focus on the things that the vast majority of the American people want, like a universal, violent criminal background check.”

Well, that’s fascinating.

Especially since what we do know about the alleged would-be assassin seems to make it pretty damn clear that universal background checks would be less than useless to stop something like this should it happen again.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooter assembled his arsenal from two California stores in the months and years before the attack.

Cole Allen purchased a Maverick 12-gauge pump-action shotgun from Turner’s Outdoorsman in Torrance last August and a Armscor semi-automatic pistol from CAP Tactical Firearms in Lawndale in October 2023.

Allen was charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon after allegedly trying to storm the banquet in DC last night.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong here, but the fact that they know where he got his guns so quickly after the incident, and they’re both licensed gun stores, seems to suggest that this turdnugget underwent a background check. Does Raskin somehow believe even more universal background checks would stop this from happening?

This wasn’t even a super evil AR-15 that can blow up a building with a single round. He had a handgun and a pump-action shotgun. Those are for self-defense and/or hunting, but not “weapons of war,” according to anti-gunners.

(We’ll leave out how the Germans in World War I felt about shotguns for a moment, obviously.)

This isn’t some evidence that we need more gun control. There’s not a single proposal out there in any legislature in the country that would have stopped this chucklehead from getting a firearm. Not a single one. Again, this wasn’t some so-called assault weapon. It wasn’t even a semi-auto shotgun. Yeah, he had a semi-automatic handgun, but so does a large chunk of the gun-owning public. That’s “in common use” even by the anti-gunners’ understanding of the term.

So what, exactly, would have stopped this from happening?

Honestly, the only thing I’ve seen suggested that might have prevented this was Trump finishing the White House ballroom, because then no one gets in without an invitation.

But, if there’s one thing we’ve learned about anti-gunners is that while their standards might swing around like a wind sock in a tornado, the one thing they’re consistent about is using every opportunity to justify gun control, even if nothing they say is going to make a lick of sense.
