LA County Supervisor Demands Investigation Into Store Where Would-Be Assassin Bought Gun

The would-be Trump assassin was, from all outward appearances, a model citizen before traveling across the country to try to kill the president and the rest of the administration, curiously absent Kash Patel. He had no criminal record, went through every hoop the state of California could throw at him, and lawfully purchased the guns he later used to try to undo the outcome of a presidential election he didn’t agree with.

But the store he got at least one of his guns from has come under scrutiny. They sell a bunch of guns, and as with almost every high-volume dealer, some of those firearms lawfully sold eventually ended up in criminal hands. While The Trace made a thing about that recently, even they had to acknowledge that there’s no evidence the store did anything wrong. In fact, all evidence suggests that the chain is strict about following the law.

But that isn’t stopping a Los Angeles County Supervisor from engaging in hysterics and demanding an investigation into the store.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn has requested a formal investigation into a Torrance gun retailer linked to the high-profile shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

What we know:

Supervisor Hahn sent a formal letter to District Attorney Nathan Hochman requesting an investigation into the Turner’s Outdoorsman location on Hawthorne Boulevard.

The store is where Cole Tomas Allen allegedly purchased the shotgun used in the April 25 attack at the Washington Hilton.

Beyond this specific incident, California Department of Justice data shows that Turner’s Outdoorsman locations in LA County are linked to a disproportionate number of firearms recovered at crime scenes.

Between 2022 and 2024, nearly 8,000 guns traced to crimes in California originated from Turner’s stores.

As I noted when I looked at The Trace’s so-called report, Turner’s sells about 20 percent of the guns in California. About 25 percent of the guns traced from crime scenes were originally purchased at a Turner’s location. That’s close to parity, and since the ATF, as well as current and former staff, all attest that Turner’s is “meticulous”–that’s the ATF’s word, mind you–in its recordkeeping, there’s zero evidence they’ve done anything wrong.

Hahn says their practices warrant such an investigation, but the truth is that she’s grasping. Again, there’s no evidence at all that their practices are anything but on the up and up.

Which, of course, means that the real problem is that anti-gunners lied about all of the roadblocks they put in place for lawful gun buyers, all in the name of stopping gun trafficking. That can’t be allowed to become public knowledge, I’m sure, so it makes more sense to go after a store like Turner’s.

See, while straw purchases are a thing, a smart straw buyer isn’t going to make a thing about who they’re buying the gun for. They’re just going to act like it’s for them the whole time. Larger retailers are likely more attractive to these kinds of buyers because the odds of seeing the same faces time and after time is lower, too. The stores can do everything right and still sell to a lot of straw buyers.

And let’s be real here, this had nothing to do with what the CADOJ says. This comes just a couple of days after The Trace released their attempt at a hit piece, which is what the anti-gun “newsroom” likely wanted.

Of course, someone like Hahn wouldn’t look at the bit about how there’s no evidence that Turner’s has ever done anything but its level best to prevent guns from getting in the wrong hands, even refusing to release firearm sales where the background check comes back as “undetermined,” despite being legally allowed to do so.

No, that doesn’t make good grandstanding fodder, now does it?
