As it was already clear to New York officials that NYSRPA v. Bruen was about to go against them, they started working on measures that would still restrict guns as much as they could while following the letter of the ruling. Or what they thought would be the letter of it. A lot of that has been smacked down by lower courts, but they still tried because, in their minds, guns are bad.
Not everything has gotten crushed by the courts, though, and so carrying a gun lawfully is still a pain.
But for criminals, it’s no big deal, and a recent incident in Brooklyn kind of illustrates the problem.
At least eight people, including four children, were shot late Saturday at New York’s Coney Island, leaving one woman in critical condition.
Officers responded to reports of multiple people shot at about 10:35 p.m., New York police said in a statement. They found eight victims with gunshot wounds in the front courtyard of a residential building.
The victims — four adults and four children — were taken to nearby hospitals. The children are ages 6, 7, 12 and 14.
The preliminary investigation indicates an unknown man dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Avenue in Brooklyn and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard where a family barbecue was taking place before he ran away, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Sunday morning.
“There is no indication at this time that there was any argument or altercation at the barbecue before the shooting occurred,” Tisch said.
Police are investigating whether the shooting may be connected to a confirmed gang-related homicide on the same block last week, she said.
Since the gun recovered at the scene was described as a “TEC-9-style” handgun, I’m kind of leaning toward it being a gang thing as well.
Of course, TEC-9s are illegal in New York, as is walking around Brooklyn with one. Then again, so is shooting eight people, four of whom are kids, so I guess it’s kind of like we’re right about how criminals don’t care about the freaking law.
Weird, right?
While Boston is as anti-gun as New York City is, it didn’t have an incident like this. They just had a series of shootings that left two people dead and 11 others injured.
This is all on Independence Day, mind you. One day, two anti-gun cities, nearly 20 people shot and two killed, and that’s just what popped up in my various feeds. I have no doubt I could find a whole lot more examples.
The truth is that gun control doesn’t stop the criminal. That’s just common sense. Yeah, I know that actual common sense is so rare these days it qualifies as a superpower, but the point stands. It doesn’t require a massive leap to grasp that criminals don’t obey the law.
Shooting kids? That’s illegal.
