Delaware Anti-Gunners Ignore Reality in Demanding Special Session

Homicides hit historic lows in 2025, and all indications seem to suggest that we’re going to set a new low here in 2026. That’s fantastic news, especially as this drop has coincided with the fearmongering among anti-gunners following the Bruen decision.
The problem is, though, that anti-gunners don’t actually care about reality. All they need is enough of a perception that there’s a problem to sort of justify them doing stupid things, like, say, calling for a special legislative session to pass gun control in one of the most anti-gun states in the nation.
The Delaware-based gun control group End Community Violence Now (ECVN) is using the new report from Delaware News Journal to call on the state’s legislature to hold a taxpayer-funded special legislative session to send even more gun control laws to Gov. Matt Meyer’s desk to enact.
“Every day we wait to act, another young life is put at risk,” ECVN Executive Director Lauren Footman stated while calling for the special session. “Delaware’s young people deserve more than promises, they deserve action, investment, and leaders who are willing to do everything possible to protect them.”
Joining Footman was Tarria Stanley, the legislative director at the gun control group Community Justice. Stanley added, “A special session is an opportunity to move beyond intentions and take meaningful action that equips communities with the resources they need to save lives.”
But Delaware already has some of the nation’s strictest gun control laws on the books. The state recently enacted a handgun permit-to-purchase law that makes it extremely difficult, costly and burdensome for a regular law-abiding citizen to acquire a common handgun. Delaware has a so-called “red flag” law that allows firearms to be confiscated with little due process protections for the accused. The First State has unconstitutional mandatory firearm storage laws, unconstitutional restrictions on various Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) — the most popular selling semiautomatic rifles in the country — and the state already prohibits “machinegun conversion devices” (MCDs), the already-illegal attachment that allows a criminal to turn a lawful semiautomatic firearm into an illegal automatic one. NSSF reminds gunowners to remain on the “Right Side of Legal™.”
If there’s a gun control idea out there, it’s more than likely already law in Delaware. So, the calls for using taxpayer dollars for yet more Second Amendment restrictions comes at a particularly noteworthy time. Across the country, violent crime — including criminal misuse of firearms and murder — are at historic, 125-year lows. Yet in Delaware, as the Delaware News Journal report suggests, criminal misuse of guns is still a problem.
The activist groups calling for even more gun control are preaching to the choir.
In other words, historic lows aren’t good enough; they have to do more, even though there’s no evidence that all of their past gun control efforts have done a damn thing to make anything better. In fact, since the historic drop in violent crime is nationwide, I have questions. After all, if violent crime is still a significant problem in Delaware, despite all the gun control that was supposed to address it, why does anyone think more of what failed is the answer?
Both Everytown and Giffords have celebrated Delaware’s gun control laws, and yet they don’t seem to be doing any good. Then again, those groups don’t celebrate outcomes, only legislation.
I’d hope that Gov. Matt Meyer would dismiss these calls, but as he’s an anti-gunner himself, I suspect that he’ll give them more consideration than they deserve.
If it happens, I feel bad for our brothers and sisters in Delaware. They deserve better from their home state. I’d tell them they should move, but that’s not a super productive solution to the overall problem of the Northeast being the stronghold of anti-gun sentiment. Between them and the West Coast, there aren’t as many safe states as we should accept.
Editor’s Note: The radical Left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
