New Jersey’s ban on so-called assault weapons is still in place despite the Third Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruling that the ban violates the Second Amendment. The appellate court stayed its opinion while the state of New Jersey appeals to the Supreme Court, which is already slated to hear two other challenges to semi-auto bans in its next term.
With the Garden State’s “assault weapon” ban in serious legal jeopardy, are Democrat lawmakers in Trenton getting ready to unleash a new gun ban on residents?
According to a recent March For Our Lives email, the answer is yes.

The language of the email really is strange. There’s no bill number, nor is there any description of what would be covered under the proposed ban.
The email states that New Jersey lawmakers “have a chance to pass critical legislation banning weapons of war from our communities.” That “weapons of war” phrase is generally used by the anti-gunners to describe commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms that they label “assault weapons,” but again, New Jersey already has a ban in place (though probably not for much longer).
If New Jersey Democrats really are planning a new gun ban, it would most likely be a prohibition on the sale of striker-fired pistols like Glocks. New York, Maryland, and California have already enacted similar laws, while New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport is involved in civil litigation against the gun company, accusing it of knowingly manufacturing a product that can be readily converted to full-auto fire through the illegal installation of a switch.
I can’t recall an anti-gunner ever referring to a Glock as a “weapon of war”, though, and if this supposed ban involves prohibiting particular firearms “from our communities,” then that would theoretically encompass the use of these pistols by law enforcement. Police are exempt from every one of the Glock ban bills that have been enacted, and I can’t imagine that New Jersey would be any different.
My guess is that MFOL is either referring to a Glock ban while using the standard talking points about so-called assault weapons, or there is no “weapons ban” being bandied about in Trenton at the moment. The March For Our Lives email contains a call to action, but it’s not about contacting lawmakers to encourage them to pass a particular piece of legislation. Instead, the group wants its readers to sign a petition to “tell New Jersey leadership: Protect our communities and pass the weapons ban now.”
New Jersey’s legislature isn’t even in session at the moment, which just adds to the weirdness of the vaguely worded email. I suspect that this “petition” is nothing more than an attempt to see who on their mailing list is actually engaging with their emails so that those folks can be targeted for fundraising pitches in the future.
It’s no secret that MFOL is a shell of what it was just a few years ago when its founders were media darlings. A year ago, the Everytown-affiliated website The Trace described March For Our Lives as foundering, pointing to the layoffs of almost all paid staff, a significant gap in funds raised and money spent, and a lawsuit from a former employee alleging the board of directors has been engaged in racial discrimination.
There’s no sign that MFOL has been able to turn things around in the 12 months since The Trace detailed the group’s problems, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the group is in desperate need of an influx of cash. To me, that’s the most logical reason for the vaguely worded email, but we shouldn’t count out basic ineptness on the part of the few remaining employees either.
