I won’t call this a mass shooting, even if the media is, but it’s still a horrific enough scene in Minneapolis this morning. Two people are dead, and six others were injured, including three police officers, in an incident that had the police showing up to something that was probably a combination of a TV cop show scene and something out of their professional nightmares.
It also appears that, thankfully, the gunman was also killed.
Officers confronted a barrage of gunfire, their vision clouded by a haze, as they responded to a shooting at a Minneapolis apartment building Wednesday that left at least two people dead and injured multiple others, officials said.
Police exchanged gunfire with the shooter as they rushed to rescue victims and bring them to safety, Minneapolis Police Interim Chief Bill Peterson said. Three officers were injured, two of them by gunshots.
The shooter, who officials have not yet named, was also confirmed dead, officials said. Peterson said police “were familiar with who this individual was.”
The mass shooting forced residents to flee the halls and hide in apartments as the chaotic scene unfolded.
What appears to be dozens of officers poured into the apartment building in response to the shooting, video obtained by CNN affiliate WCCO shows. Officers armed with long guns can later be seen keeping watch outside as several people are wheeled out from the building on stretchers. The area was surrounded by police cruisers, armored vehicles and ambulances.
“But for their heroic work, the death toll would have been far higher,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a news conference Wednesday night.
One person died at the scene and another died at a hospital, Minneapolis city officials said. Another three civilians were shot and are being treated at a hospital.
Funny how Frey sang a different tune in 2020 and was all about denouncing officers in his department.
Still, in this case, he’s right. It probably would have been much, much worse.
And, of course, CNN being CNN, they couldn’t leave well enough alone.
The tragedy comes as Americans are increasingly seeing mass shootings in everyday public spaces. It happened only 5 miles away from Annunciation Catholic Church, where a shooter killed two children and wounded 27 others just a year ago, shaking a community bedrock.
I’ll note first that with only two people dead, this isn’t a mass shooting.
Second, even if you do use the Gun Violence Archive’s definition, which CNN most definitely does, then the claim doesn’t track in the least, as even GVA notes:
That screenshot was taken just minutes ago, as I write this, and there’s nothing to indicate that Americans are “increasingly” seeing jack squat.
Plus, right now, it doesn’t seem that anyone knows what the hell happened. Police responded to the same apartment building earlier in the day because of a disturbance related to someone being evicted, but it’s unknown if the shooting is related to that disturbance.
Look, I hate seeing crap like this. It’s not just the political ramifications for me, either, because I’ve been one of those who wakes up in the morning to find out someone I cared about was killed on the other side of the country. Every mass shooting takes me back to that morning. I’d rather not ever experience that again.
But what I hate almost as much is how outlets like CNN try to make this political by inserting claims without any hint of reality, and cite nothing except one other incident more than 365 days before. They didn’t even just leave it to the fact that the Annunciation shooting happened a year ago, but tried to make a claim that’s simply not supported by the evidence.
For now, we’ll be keeping up with what really freaking happened, and while I’m not going to pretend to be unbiased, I don’t think any of you would know what to do if I tried.
In the meantime, pray for the injured and for the families of the victims.
