Colorado used to be a fairly pro-gun state, but then the Aurora theater shooting happened, and it seems like the state absolutely lost its ever-loving mind. It’s been embracing more and more gun control, and the only reason it hasn’t had more is that Gov. Jared Polis has just enough libertarian leanings to keep some of the worst of it at bay.
Not enough, obviously, but some.
Unfortunately, one of his potential successors has no such libertarian leanings and could end up making Gavin Newsom look like Ron DeSantis when it comes to guns…and probably everything else.
Colorado may be preparing to elect one of the most aggressive gun-control governors in America in a state in which firearms remain part of the cultural environment for a very large share of the population. That alone makes Phil Weiser’s candidacy worth watching.
Weiser has not been coy about where he stands. During his tenure as attorney general, he has defended Colorado’s magazine restrictions, supported red-flag laws, backed restrictions on so-called ghost guns, joined multistate efforts defending federal firearms regulations and applauded additional state gun-control measures. His gubernatorial platform promises more of the same under the familiar banner of “gun safety.”
Supporters will call that consistency. Gun owners may use a different word.
The latest example is Senate Bill 25-003, which took effect August 1 and imposes new requirements on Coloradans seeking to purchase certain semiautomatic firearms. Depending on the buyer’s background plus qualifications, the process can involve state paperwork, sheriff review, an eligibility card, approved training, testing, and additional costs.
There is something revealing about the structure of this policy. It falls almost entirely on people trying to buy firearms legally.
In other words, Weiser is like every other anti-gunner out there who says he wants to stop so-called gun violence, but they ignore the actual violent people and instead focus on lawful gun owners who have done nothing wrong.
Keep in mind that Weiser is also part of that whole anti-ICE crowd, who seems to think that deporting illegal aliens with a history of violence is somehow wrong, even though the last couple of years have seen massive deportations and massive drops in violent crime. While it’s impossible to prove that the two are intimately connected, couple that with the Bruen decision and you find a world where people like Weiser might as well claim the Earth is flat.
Unfortunately, while supporters will call his continued anti-gun jihad “consistency,” and I value consistency, we need to remember that being consistent isn’t a good thing if you suck. While I can respect Weiser maintaining his position rather than Kamala Harris trying to position herself as a friend to gun owners after supporting handgun bans, among other things, it doesn’t change that while his consistency is good, what he’s consistent about blows goats.
And there’s a real chance Colorado could elect this guy.
He’s already won at least one statewide race in order to be attorney general, and unless the Republican nominee resonates more than typical for a red candidate in a deeply blue state, Weiser’s likely going to be the state’s next governor.
Which is the last thing Colorado gun owners need right now.
