Anti-gunners like to attribute all sorts of nefarious things to their opponents. They’ll accuse them of dirty, underhanded things like buying politicians outright, all while doing the exact same things. This is called “projection,” and when it comes to anti-Second Amendment types, they’re IMAX level.
It seems, though, that in the US Virgin Islands, their anti-gunners are up to some even deeper shenanigans.
For example, let’s look at this little tidbit from Sen. Clifford Joseph, Sr.
No big deal, right? It’s just announcing a town hall. Transparency and discussion are good things, right?
Well, yeah, they are, but he posted this on November 25 at 11:58 in the morning. That’s about six hours before the first town hall. You know, two days before Thanksgiving Day.
The second, which was Monday evening, was on St. Thomas on the first day after a holiday weekend, when a lot of people are still traveling. Granted, there’s at least some forewarning, but that still requires people to scuttle their plans, travel to a different island, and attend the meeting. Virgin Islands Safe Gun Owners (VISGO) was there last night, but that’s beside the point.
The whole plan was to make it as difficult as possible for pro-gun voices to be heard at what are supposed to be town halls to discuss the issues and the proposed solutions.
Sen. Joseph is the chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, Justice, and Public Safety in the US Virgin Islands Senate, and at the same time this was going on, he invited VISGO founder Kosei Ohno to a hearing on December 4th. This was on the same day he announced the town halls.
This is, of course, the same Senate committee that abruptly canceled a hearing where VISGO was to be heard in opposition to a gun control measure back in October.
And, while they did invite Ohno with at least some lead time, it was again, right before the holiday. Not everyone was checking emails. It seems Ohno didn’t get the email inviting him to speak on the gun control bills until Monday. In reply, provided by Ohno, he reiterated some questions that he’s asked Joseph’s staff previously. It seems he never got an answer.
Shocking, right?
It seems to me that there are a few possibilities why this seems to keep happening there, and none of them are good. It’s either intentional shenanigans because of the issue, the shenanigans are completely normal across the board regardless of issues, or just outright incompetence. I do not rule out some combination of two or more of these, for the record.
Either way, it’s a bad sign. This is a United States territory, and that means they’re subject to the laws of this nation. That includes the Second Amendment. The fact that they keep trying to play this kind of shell game with VISGO is disturbing. I don’t know enough about the general political situation down there to know if this is the norm or not, but it doesn’t matter. It’s wrong whether this is just one lawmaker or business as usual.
These are American citizens. They deserve better than this.
