California Set to Make It Even More Expensive to Keep and Bear Arms

One reason many give for opposing citizen carry of any kind is that we’re not trained as well as the police. We don’t know what we’re doing and we don’t have to maintain their level of marksmanship standards.
While they’re overstating the training and standards of law enforcement more than a smidge, I can at least understand the concerns about training. If they were valid, at least.
I don’t think they are, though.
Why do I say that? Because I’ve seen the same people who make that argument support nonsense like this.
Starting July 1, gun owners in California will see the cost of verification for purchasing ammunition increase from $1 to $5.
The state claims the fee hike is necessary to cover costs, but Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson expressed skepticism, saying it’s just one more thing targeting gun owners who follow the law.
“There’s no big cost. There’s no big cost for them to do it any different, here. That is just not true,” Sheriff Johnson said. “They just keep trying to chip away and make it more difficult for California gun ownership and concealed weapons permits. If you look at it, it’s a 400% increase on… yes, it’s $1 to $5, that may not seem like a lot, but to me, it is. And it’s just another avenue for them to increase the costs of your law-abiding, constitutionally protected, gun-owning right.”
I’m just going to point out that California isn’t required to have a law that mandates background checks for ammo purchases, and if gun control worked so well, there’s no reason to restrict who can buy ammo in the first place. I’m also going to point out that the background checks for said ammo haven’t done jack squat to reduce violent crime in the state.
But I’m also going to point out that if you think that gun owners not being well-trained enough is an issue, making it more expensive for them to train is counterproductive at best.
Especially because you’re deluded if you think this is the last increase we’re going to see.
We’ll see a ton more down the road, all with the same, “But we have to pay for it,” without ever acknowledging that you really don’t.
Of course, as Sheriff Johnson said, it’s just one more thing to add to the cost of owning a gun. They don’t want to stop crime. They want to make it so you don’t ever buy a gun.
Cam noted on Tuesday that a researcher said he wanted to “improve…the factors that contribute to firearm ownership.” This same guy praised California for their laws, which are little more than an attempt to dissuade people from buying a gun.
Now, if you want to reduce crime so people don’t feel like they need a gun, that’s fine. I’m down with that because crime is bad, and while I have guns and would have them anyway, I’d rather not have to deal with any of the ramifications of having to use them for self-defense. If that also means some people aren’t as worried about owning one, so be it.
But gun control doesn’t do that, and that’s where we’re going to have a problem.
This law, for example, doesn’t stop bad people from getting guns or shooting people. We’ve seen that through countless reports of violent crime in the state. So, rather than raise the price for law-abiding shooters, they could just knock it the hell off.
But alas, it’s California.
