Colorado Editorial Ignores…Well, Everything in Call for Gun Control

I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. Hell, there are times I’m not sure I agree with me all that much, so I can’t expect everyone else to. I’m rational enough to know that other people have different experiences that lead them in different directions, so we’re not always going to see eye to eye.

But I can’t tolerate people ignoring facts or making up their own just to push an agenda.

In the gun debate, though, that happens so often as to be laughable. A prime example comes from an editorial at the Colorado Sentinel.

Titled, “EDITORIAL: Until there are real limits on guns, school shootings will continue,” so you already know what we’re getting here.

Nothing that consumes the rest of us matters, again, this time to hundreds of students and their families at Evergreen High School.

The Epstein files, FBI gaffes and the future of TikTok do not matter today for the families of two students injured when they were shot at school in Evergreen last week. The shootings have likewise consumed the hundreds of students and their families who were terrified during the gunfire, taking the events of Sept. 11, 2025 with them for the rest of their lives.

Mattering least of all are the meaningless, hollow and cruel offerings of “thoughts and prayers” from political leaders who tout their five-star rating from the National Rifle Association for working to undermine gun-control laws that might have spared two injured students and the life of the student gunman, and lives lost every day to guns all over the nation.

These past surviving school shooting victims and their families remember back to the “thoughts and prayers” they, too, received from people like Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and GOP Senate Minority Leader John Thune and a long list of fellow Republicans and Democrats alike who have offered nothing else to stem the plague of gun violence in the nation.

Instead, the country has for years been awash in political leaders who gaslight the nation by insisting that it’s not the guns.

Only liars and fools hold onto that trembling thread of nonsense.

Of course it’s the guns.

First, let’s understand that the use of the term “gaslighting” here, which means they believe we’re knowingly misleading people by trying to make them think something we all know to be untrue. They can’t fathom the idea that someone actually thinks gun control is wrong.

But let’s understand something here that was largely ignored by this editorial: Colorado already has extensive gun control laws, and the shooting at Evergreen still happened. If gun control would prevent such tragedies, then why didn’t it?

Mass shootings have happened throughout American history. The oldest school massacre in the nation predated the percussion cap, for crying out loud.

This shooter used a revolver, the kind of handgun that absolutely no one is trying to restrict anyway. The state already has mandatory storage laws, which are supposed to stop a kid from accessing a parent’s gun, but this 16-year-old shooter got a revolver anyway. He also had a whole bunch of ammo. The only reason it wasn’t worse wasn’t because of an armed response, but because the doors were locked and he couldn’t get to the targets.

It wasn’t gun control that kept this from being worse. Gun control failed here as it’s failed in so many other incidents, and the editorial board here expects us to ignore that. They expect us to ignore how this happened on the same day as Charlie Kirk was killed; neither incident involved a gun that’s on the top of any gun ban priority list for literally anyone.

History, to say nothing of the facts of this case, makes it clear that gun control isn’t an answer, and yet they had the nerve to actually try and make this argument.

You can’t reason with unreasonable people, and this is yet another example of the problem.
