Cooler Wars Heat Up: Coleman Capitalizes On Igloo Recall With ‘Trade Up’ Offer

Recently, Igloo recalled more than 1 million 90-quart rolling coolers because of “fingertip amputation and crushing hazards.” It’s one of the largest cooler recalls in the brand’s history, and Igloo’s competitor, Coleman, didn’t hesitate to seize the opportunity for some good PR.
This week, Coleman announced its “Cooler Trade Up” sweepstakes. Now, anyone who bought one of the recalled Igloos can enter for a chance to win a 55-quart Coleman Pro to replace their Igloo.
“If you unknowingly purchased a cooler that comes with a side of safety risk, Coleman is going to take it off your hands and swap it for a completely safe, high-quality cooler upgrade,” the brand wrote in an email announcing the program.
If you’re one of the owners of the recalled Igloo coolers and want to jump ship for Coleman, all you have to do is fill out this form with your name and address. You can also enter through the brand’s Instagram. If you are one of the lucky winners, Coleman will send you a brand new 55-quart Coleman Pro Cooler.
With the new cooler in hand, the brand cheekily said, “The only thing getting crushed is the ice under your beverages.”
This sweepstakes is only valid through Feb. 28, and entry doesn’t guarantee you will get a new Coleman cooler. The brand is only giving away 12 55-quart Coleman Cooler Pros in the Neptune color. Coleman is selecting the lucky recipients at random from those who enter.
Interestingly, neither the Sweepstakes rules nor the entry form require proof of ownership of an Igloo Cooler to be eligible. So technically, anyone can enter to win.
Igloo Recall: Coolers Pose Amputation, Crushing Hazards
Igloo issued the recall of its 90 Quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers on Feb. 13, 2025. According to the brand, it recalled roughly 1,060,000 coolers in the U.S., another 47,000 in Canada, and 23,000 in Mexico. The issue has to do with the rolling tow handle. Apparently, it can pinch fingertips against the cooler hard enough to potentially amputate or crush your digits.
The recalled coolers were manufactured between Jan. 2019 through Jan. 2025. Costco, Target, Academy, Dick’s, and other stores sold them, as well as Amazon.com, Igloocoolers.com, and other websites.
To see a full list of the SKUs included in the recall, visit the Igloo webpage for the recall and see the table under the “Recall Details” section. Check your Igloo 90 Quart Flip & Tow Rolling Cooler to see if yours is included. The SKU is on labels on the bottom of the cooler.
If you don’t want to switch brands and enter Coleman’s Trade Up sweepstakes, Igloo is offering replacements as well. Contact Igloo at [email protected], and the brand will send you a free replacement cooler.
Coleman Pro Cooler Sweepstakes
Coleman claims its Pro Cooler is the most durable in its lineup. It has a fully insulated lid and body and an antimicrobial liner to prevent odor, mildew, and mold. The Coleman Pro cooler leverages an extendable handle and wheels for easy transportation. The entire Pro Cooler collection can be viewed here. Winners of this sweepstakes will have to downsize from a 90-quart capacity to 55 quarts.
Regardless, the offer is a cost-effective deal (even if you lose some cooler capacity). Igloo’s 90 Quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers retail for between $80 and $140, according to the brand. The 55-quart Coleman Pro Cooler retails for $350.
If you own one of the recalled Igloo 90 Quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers, you’ve got replacement options. Hopefully, you’ve also still got all of your fingers.
