Delaware Teen Arrested for Bringing Gun to School

Delaware isn’t a state that’s friendly toward the Second Amendment. If you look at the laws on the books, the only two that are remotely pro-gun are that there’s no requirement to have a license to own a firearm–you need one to purchase a handgun, but not to own it later on–and preemption.
That’s literally it. They’ve got everything else anti-gunners could dream of, including a mandatory storage law.
Yet, despite the plethora of infringements on people’s Second Amendment rights in the state, they didn’t seem to do a whole heck of a lot to prevent this kind of thing from happening.
The Dover Police Department (DPD) has arrested a 15-year-old on gun charges after officers say he brought a gun to his high school on Monday.
Police say their investigation began on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 2, after a Capital School District staff member was notified that a 15-year-old male student had brought a firearm to Dover High School the day prior.
The following morning, high school staff and the School Resource Officer (SRO) immediately took the 15-year-old into custody without incident when he arrived at school. Police say the 15-year-old was not in possession of a firearm when taken into custody. DPD’s Drugs, Vice and Organized Crime Unit assisted with this investigation, and recovered two handguns associated with the reported incident from the student’s residence.
The kid was locked up in the local youth detention facility with a bond of over $36,000. He faces charges for possession of a firearm in a safe school zone and other “related gun charges.”
Now, let’s keep in mind that this is a 15-year-old in a very anti-gun state. They have a ton of laws all predicated on keeping guns out of the hands of people who couldn’t lawfully own them. Opposition to these laws was met with claims, at least by some, that rather than concerns over how the measures would affect lawful gun ownership, they were about supporting guns in criminal hands.
But this is a child. This is someone who cannot buy a gun lawfully anywhere on the planet, but especially not in gun-controlled Delaware.
And yet, here we are.
He didn’t have just one gun, but two. We only have reason to believe he had one at school, not both. It doesn’t matter. He had more guns than some anti-gunners think you should ever be allowed to own, and that was despite not being old enough to even drive on his own.
How do people keep claiming gun control laws work when 15-year-old kids are bringing guns to school despite all of the laws meant to prevent exactly that from happening?
Of course, as we’ve noticed from history, it’s not like anti-gunners are known for owning up to the failures of their own laws and admitting they don’t work like they claimed they would…unless it’s to justify yet another law. Then, they’re willing to say the previous law was imperfect, but only to increase the infringement.
This case is a prime example of how they don’t work. They’ve never worked. They will never work.
At least, not if the goal is to keep guns out of criminal hands. If the purpose is what I suspect it is, which is to make it a pain for lawful gun purchases, then I guess it’s working great.
