Everytown Law Now Taking Aim at Ruger RXM Pistol

Now that Glock has announced its discontinuing most of its product line and replacing existing models with its new “V” series, which is widely believed to be a response to the ongoing litigation and legislation targeting the illegal conversion of Glock handguns into fully-automatic machine pistols, gun control groups are taking aim at other gun makers offering models with similar designs.Â
Eric Tirschwell, head of Everytown Law, has sent a letter to Sturm, Ruger’s general counsel warning of “an urgent matter of public safety”; the company’s RXM pistol, which was introduced last year.
In the letter, Tirschwell claims that with Glock and (supposedly) Shadow Systems making changes to their designs to make it more difficult to use “switches” to illegally convert the semi-automatic handguns into full-auto pistols, Ruger is now the “the largest U.S. manufacturer of a pistol that appears to be easily convertible into an illegal machine gun, and risks Ruger’s RXM becoming the new crime gun of choice across the country.”
Tirschwell admits that he’s not aware of any illegally modified RXM pistol being confiscated by police or used in a crime, but alleges that “it is almost certainly only a matter of time,” and calls on the company to pull the pistol from the market “immediately” or else risk the same onslaught of litigation that’s been brought against Glock by anti-gun mayors and AGs.
As you must be aware, since 2024, the cities of Chicago, Baltimore, and Seattle, and th estates of Minnesota, Maryland, and New Jersey, have each sued Glock for selling pistols that, because of their design, are easily converted to illegal machine guns. Judges in three of those lawsuits so far have held that the plaintiffs have stated viable claims for relief, rejecting Glock’s motions to dismiss and ruling that the lawsuits may proceed. If Ruger continues on its present path, it faces similar litigation risks—especially given that Ruger put the RXM on the market years after the dangerousness of this design became apparent.Â
Ruger faces a choice following Glock’s recent announcement: Will it continue to distribute and sell the RXM despite the evidence of its ease of convertibility to an illegal machine gun, or will it put public safety first? To ensure that Ruger does not exacerbate the alarming proliferation of deadly DIY machine guns across American cities and states, we urge you to take the only responsible course of action and remove the Ruger RXM from the market unless and until you change the pistol’s design.
To underscore the threat of litigation, Tirschwell made sure to copy Connecticut Attorney General William Tong in his letter to Sturm, Ruger. While Tong’s office hasn’t officially sued Glock, he was one of twelve Democrat attorneys general to send a demand letter to the gunmaker earlier this year requesting the company “preserve all evidence related to its line of Glock pistols.”Â

Pretty clear Everytown is controlling several state AG offices and legislatures.
And they will use this “easy to convert” logic on AR15s next. pic.twitter.com/guch63cnE9

Moros is right. In fact, Brady has already tried to use this logic in civil litigation by claiming that AR-15s and other semi-automatic rifles like the WASR-10 constitute machine guns because “as per ATF’s guidance, it ‘possess[es] design features which facilitate full automatic fire by a simple modification or elimination of existing component parts.'”
The gun control lobby hasn’t had much luck convincing judges to go along with their assertions, but until the Supreme Court explicitly rules that AR-15s and other semi-automatic firearms are protected by the Second Amendment groups like Brady are going to continue to make this argument… and they may very well get anti-gun attorneys general to join them.Â
So far there’s been no official response from Sturm, Ruger or Magpul (which collaborated with the gun maker on the RXM), and the pistol itself remains available for sale, according to Ruger’s website. Everytown’s letter didn’t lay out any sort of deadline for Ruger to comply with its demands other than the “immediate” removal of the RXM pistol from the market, and my guess is the gun control group is already working with anti-gun AGs like Tong on a complaint that can be filed in short order.Â
