Florida College Student Arrested for Being Dumbest Gun Owner Possible

If you live in New Jersey but go to college in Florida, I can understand someone wanting to take advantage of the much better gun laws in the Sunshine State. You still have to jump through New Jersey state laws, regardless of where you buy it, but it’s a little easier to own any firearm and to enjoy shooting it in the Deep South.
Unless, of course, you’re an absolute idiot.
That’s the best-case scenario for a Florida college student, who is originally from New Jersey, when he was arrested over his possession of an AR-15…under his bed in his dorm room.
A Florida college student allegedly ordered 1,500 rounds of ammunition to his dorm room, where cops later found a semi-automatic rifle stashed under his bed, according to police and reports.
Constantine Demetriades, 21, was busted Wednesday after security at Rollins College in Winter Park flagged his massive online ammo order, according to charging documents obtained by WKMG.
Police later arrived and found an AR-15 and six magazines — one loaded and five empty — along with a tactical vest, multiple knives, a black security vest, ear protection, and a pistols storage case, Winter Park authorities said.
Although Florida allows open carry, the liberal arts college, where Demetriades is a senior, bans all weapons on campus, the school’s website states.
The suspect allegedly admitted to knowing the school’s weapons policy but said he brought the rifle to campus after buying and registering it in New Jersey over Thanksgiving break, the court docs showed.
While Florida allows open carry, it doesn’t allow campus carry. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a permit or not, you’re not carrying a firearm onto a college campus lawfully.
Yet he did it illegally at least twice, and we have to assume that he might not be super honest about that.
Of course, he claims he normally stores the gun at a friend’s off-campus apartment, which would be perfectly legal so far as I’m aware, but I have doubts about that.
After all, Demetriades ordered 1,500 rounds to his dorm room.
While I don’t get worked up over multi-thousand-round orders because I’ve made my fair share of them, too, the truth is that he ordered that much ammo to his dorm room instead of his friend’s off-campus apartment. Why wouldn’t you have the large ammo order go there instead of to your dorm room if that was an option?
Of course, there may be other reasons, but the truth is that the best-case scenario for this is that Demetriades is an idiot.
The worst-case scenario for all of this is that he was actually planning a massacre and just got caught before he could pull it off. There doesn’t seem to be any evidence of that, thankfully, at least at this time. There might be later, but I’d think that if they had any, they’d make it public if for no other reason than to make their investigative prowess look better, even though they only know about it because the kid was stupid.
And yes, he was, in fact, stupid. Not only did he break the law, but he kept an AR-15 seemingly unsecured under the bed in his dorm room, where just about any moron could find it and do something either stupid or evil with it. Even if it had a gun lock on it, that’s a trivial obstacle, and that’s what makes him a real idiot.
I think students should be able to have guns on campus, and I’m down with them having them in the dorms, too. I’m just saying they should secure them better than hiding them like the adult magazines my generation of males used to steal from their dads.
