Former Deputy Direct of Office of Gun Violence Prevention Lies to Congress

The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention was a short-lived project that was always a problem. It wasn’t so much an effort to reduce violence as it was a federal jobs program for anti-gun activists. I figure we’ll see it again, absent Congress taking some kind of action to prevent it, just as soon as a Democrat returns to the Oval Office.
But while it wasn’t around long, it still was a thing.
Recently, the deputy director of that office spoke to Congress, and his comments were, well, interesting.
And by “interesting,” I mean they were a complete and total lie, told to Congress under oath.
A recent U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled “Blue City Chaos and Tragedy: How the Trump Administration Is Addressing the Human Cost of Soft-on-Crime Policies” exposed the lunacy that billionaire gun control proponent George Soros, along with his son, Alex, is actively funding.
One hearing witness was Gregory Jackson, Jr., the deputy director of former President Joe Biden’s White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. He’s currently the head of the Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF). Judiciary committee members, and even other panelists, were ready to pick apart his organization’s dangerous statements and unmask the wealthy antigun individuals funding it.
…
Jackson’s own remarks weren’t limited to disinformation regarding his organization’s positions and statements, though. He himself offered flat out falsehoods about who can and cannot legally obtain a firearm for lawful purposes.
Responding to Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s (D-Minn.) comments about the need for a new so-called “assault weapon” ban and raising the minimum age to purchase long guns from federally licensed firearm retailers from 18 to 21, Jackson’s response was shocking.
“Yeah, I think that’s a really important step to make sure we keep guns out of the hands of our youth. One of the witnesses earlier showed a picture of young men with firearms in Tennessee, and there’s no minimum age to purchase there,” he bizarrely asserted.
Jackson didn’t misspeak. In a separate exchange with Committee Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jackson again claimed, as fact, that, “there’s no background check” in “places like Tennessee.”
Of course, there are federal minimum ages that all licensed gun dealers must adhere to. It doesn’t matter if Tennessee has an age limit in state law because the federal requirements are already in place. Long guns require someone to be 18 or older, and handguns are for 21 and over.
To say there are no background checks or age limits in places such as Tennessee is an outright lie.
I’m not one to throw the word “lie” around lightly. My working definition of a lie is that it’s something that someone says which they know to be inaccurate, but say anyway in an attempt to mislead someone. A joke isn’t a lie, and being wrong isn’t a lie. Someone has to know what they’re saying isn’t true.
And if someone was highly placed in the anti-gun side of things enough to become the number two person in a particular office of the White House, one should expect them to have at least a basic understanding of what the rules currently in existence are.
So, unless he was literally too ignorant to hold the job he held, much less to speak authoritatively before Congress, he had to know what he was saying was untrue.
In other words, a lie.
And lying to Congress is a crime, as former FBI Director James Comey has recently been made aware.
But the truth is that members of Congress are often ignorant of what the status quo is on so many aspects of American life that they can be easily misled. Remember the hearings on social media, where it was pretty clear that most of the lawmakers talking didn’t know anything about the subject? Gun laws might be better understood by most, but no one can count on that.
So lying to Congress could well lead to some idiotic debates in the future about states that supposedly don’t require background checks and will let toddlers buy machine guns.
There are potential ramifications to these lies.
They cannot be excused.
