Freedom Over Party Line

Thomas Massie, the Republican Congressman representing Kentucky’s 4th District yet again in the headlines.   In the latest round of political theater coming out of Washington, D.C., Massie has yet again become the target of President Donald Trump’s ire. Via his Truth Social post, President Trump pulled no punches, directing a post at Massie, which gave an endorsement for a political challenger who has not even declared for the 2026 midterm race.  In his message, the President called Massie a “Weak and Pathetic RINO from the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky” and that he “must be thrown out of office, ASAP!”  Certainly, it has been an interesting take on Massie’s tenure in Congress since 2012. Given that over the past 6 election cycles, Massie has averaged 65.9% of the votes cast, not including his 2024 unopposed reelection campaign (which President Trump threatened to not provide an endorsement) where he was leading so heavily in the polls that the Democrat challenger dropped from the race to avoid back-to-back embarrassment.

What began over Massie’s non-support of the Trump administration’s COVID relief bill back in 2020 escalated into POTUS calling him a “Third Rate Congressman” on multiple occasions.  Fast forward five years, and Massie again has stood in opposition to the President on topics including support for American farmers and ranchers, War Powers, tariffs, the “Big Beautiful Bill”, uncontrolled government spending, and his efforts to ensure the release of the “Epstein files.”  As he has done frequently in the past, President Trump sought to attack Massie in retaliation: “He only votes against the Republican Party, making life very easy for the Radical Left.”

If you follow politics, you know that every vote Thomas Massie casts is in the best interest of the American people.  Yes, it is true that he often votes against the party line, typically based on fiscal conservatism or growing government bureaucracy.  In an age of partisan politics, this may be seen as being obstinate, contrary, or insinuated by the President’s words, “voting against the Republican Party” to aid the Democrats.  NONE of these are the case.  Unlike most of his colleagues, Massie is transparent in his intentions, decision-making process, and rationale.  His decisions are always based on logic and support for the best overall outcome of each vote.  The sad truth is that not every Congressional Bill, despite which party authored it, has the average American in mind.  One look at the national debt will end any internal debate you may have.

Although I do not live in Congressman Massie’s district, I follow his words and actions closely.  I can honestly say that I use his stance on many issues as a litmus test for how far I should dig into certain topics; or what level that I need to engage with my own Representative to ensure my support or rejection of certain legislation is heard. He has shed light on the major issues in the American beef industry, called for ending the federal funding of foreign abortions, demand for a full audit of the gold holdings in Fort Knox, blocking federal education funds for schools that do not offer religious exemptions to vaccine requirements—and the list goes on.  To me, all these issues certainly fall under the Republican platform, or at least campaign promises over the past 5 years by the GOP.

But despite the negative headlines, “mean tweets” or talking head rambling on mainstream and social media, one universal truth is evident, Thomas Massie is the most pro-Second Amendment Representative in Congress, and the Congressional Record shows this. During his time in Congress, he has undoubtedly used his position to support the American gun owner.  His co-chairing of the Second Amendment Caucus and recent speech during the Gun Owners of America’s G.O.A.L.S. event this past August is more than most in Washington, D.C. have done recently.  Since 2012, he has sponsored or co-sponsored over 15 primary bills aimed solely at reducing the number of Federal infringements on the Second Amendment.  Notable legislation includes:

H.R. 645: National Constitutional Carry Act

H.R. 1643: SAFER Vote Act (reduce handgun purchase age to 18)

H.R. 7414/2502/5066: Repeal Gun-Free Zones Act

H.R. 2267: NICS data/reporting Bill

HR 2395 “Stop Harassing Owners of Rifles Today Act(SHORT)

Each of these were purposely drafted to increase the personal freedom of Americans, not because it was in keeping with a certain party line, but because the Second Amendment was clear with its “shall not be infringed” clause.  To me, that is the mark of an effective and engaged Representative.  Both surprisingly and sadly, despite having a Republican President and with a majority in both the House of Representatives and Senate, not even one of these bills has been PASSED.  Not a single “assault weapons ban”, magazine capacity ban, state-approved “handgun roster” has been overturned or even seriously challenged by the status quo in Washington D.C., yet we are supposed to become outraged over a lone Representative standing in opposition to others’ political desires.  Frankly, I feel that we need even more Thomas Massie’s influencing the Republican party; not any calls to have him “thrown out of office!”

This is not intended to be a political commentary piece. Honestly, President Trump’s comments about Thomas Massie made be laugh a bit as an uncompromising 2A supporter.  All the SUPER PAC money that will be spent, hand-picked primary challengers, spicy social media posts or drama surrounding Thomas Massie, I know that he has and will continue to keep the American firearm owner at the top of his priorities.  I will challenge each of you to think about this: if Representative Massie was actually a Republican in Name Only, yet each of his legislative support goes towards defense of the 2A, reducing the national debt, supporting American industry, workers and full government transparency, what exactly does the current Republican Party stand for?
