Guns, Grenade Seized in Australian Arrest
A lot of American anti-gunners want us to embrace Australian-style gun control. They figure that the Aussies nailed it after a mass murder and we should do exactly what they did.
However, Australia didn’t exactly have a long history of mass shootings before they enacted their laws and they’ve seen more mass murders since passing it, so I honestly don’t see how anyone can figure it was effective, but they do.
For many, the lower overall gun-related homicide numbers are sufficient reasons all on its own. Of course, the fact that our non-gun homicide rate outstrips their total homicide rates somehow never gets brought up.
And really, Australian criminals can get weapons pretty easily, including something most of us will never be able to get lawfully.
New details have emerged from the case of an alleged home invader later involved in a police pursuit and alleged escape across state lines.
A man accused of firing at police during a car chase was allegedly carrying two pistols, a rifle and a grenade after a botched New Year’s Eve home invasion.
Paea Tuiniua and Faez Finau, both 20, allegedly fled police in a stolen car after the attempted break-and-enter at an Edensor Park home in Sydney’s southwest.
Shots were allegedly fired into the bonnet of a police car during a later pursuit with the stolen car only stopping when road spikes were used.
Tuiniua allegedly fled into bushland and escaped detection until he was stopped by police in Brisbane airport.
Following his extradition to NSW overnight, the 20-year-old faced accusations on Tuesday of possessing military-style weapons among a string of 13 charges.
Tuiniua allegedly had during and after the home invasion a grenade, AR15 semi-automatic rifle, 9mm Beretta M9 pistol and a Glock 19 Gen4 pistol.
Now, think about Australian-style gun control for a moment. Pretty much all of that is tightly controlled and impossible for most people get lawfully, and that’s true even if you exclude the freaking grenade.
I can’t go into a gun store and buy a live grenade. I can get dummy grenades all day long, but those aren’t actual grenades.
Yet this guy was pretty much loaded for war, based on what we’ve got listed here. He shot at police after a botched home invasion and could have just blown the whole police car up if he’d wanted.
So tell me again how gun laws work?
I’m pretty sure that Australia doesn’t have a free-for-all on buying grenades, after all.
See, the issue here is that those who are criminally inclined aren’t going to be content to just arm themselves with whatever happens to be legal. The harder it is to get guns, the more likely they are to seek some black market source. That includes people who somehow get their hands on grenades or whatever.
Australian-style gun control didn’t stop that because it may well have made it possible for this guy to find a grenade in the first place.
Gun control doesn’t stop bad people from getting guns. It just stops good people from getting them.
Of course, Tuiniua is only accused of these actions and it’s possible he did nothing wrong. Still, he’s accused of having a weapon that pretty much none of us can get our hands on lawfully, no matter how much we may wish we could.
