Man Arrested After Threatening to ‘Shoot Up’ Atlanta Airport

If you’ve ever been through Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, you know it’s massive and busy. There are a whole lot of people there at any given time, so if someone were to go on a rampage, the impact could be devastating.

Luckily, while we’ve seen a few shootings in airports over the years, including big ones like Atlanta, nothing has ever gotten as bad as it could have.

It’s especially fortunate when someone makes threats before doing anything. Then the police can apprehend him before he does anything, and that’s just what happened in Atlanta on Monday.

A man is facing multiple charges after police said he threatened to “shoot up” Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and was arrested there with a gun in his truck.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport threat

What we know:

According to police, Billy Joe Cagle was taken into custody Monday morning after his family called Cartersville police to report that he was driving to Atlanta and threatening to harm as many people as possible.

Cartersville police alerted the Atlanta Police Department about the threats around 9:40 a.m. and shared Cagle’s photo. Atlanta officers were told he was likely headed to the airport.

Police said Cagle entered the terminal through door S1 at 9:31 a.m. and had been inside for about 20 minutes before officers spotted him. Officers arrested him at 9:54 a.m., less than 15 minutes after being notified of the threats.

Cagle did not have any weapons on him at the time of his arrest, but police said they found an AR-15 rifle in his truck, loaded with one bullet in the chamber and 26 rounds in the magazine.

Far too often, the family shrugs off threats made by a loved one, believing he or she would never do such a thing. This time, they didn’t, and Cagle had enough rounds to ruin lives.

It doesn’t appear that he had more than that one round, and he was apprehended in the airport without his rifle on him, so it’s possible the family was concerned over nothing, but considering how mass shootings go, I’d rather see the police be safe than sorry.

However, there’s no guarantee that even if he’d had the rifle, he’d have gotten far.

The only gun-free zone in the airport is the secured portions beyond TSA security. That means an armed citizen might have been able to meet the threat and end it.

The downside, though, is that most people in the airport are catching flights, where they’re not going to be able to carry a firearm, so most people would still have been sitting ducks for Cagle if he’d opened fire.

Thank God he didn’t.

Other than the threats, Cagle doesn’t seem to have done anything illegal, but those are a big no-no. He’s likely to have to answer for that, and if he had a plan in place, that’s going to make things a whole lot harder on him.

I’m just glad I’m writing about an arrest over a terroristic threat rather than a massacre at the airport I’m going to be in, no matter where in the country I go.
