Reminder of Just How Stupid California’s Gun Laws Are

I don’t like the concept of different laws for different people. It’s one of many reasons I opposed “may issue” carry permits when they were still a thing. The well-connected had no issue getting one, regardless of any actual risks in their lives, but the rest of society was shut out, even if they were at a high risk for being the victim of a violent crime.
So when the laws do apply to everyone equally, I’m a little happier with them.
But when the laws that do apply to everyone are still stupid, that doesn’t mean I won’t use the well-connected to highlight the idiocy.
Enter Gavin Newsom, who is both “idiocy” personified and the well-connected individual who was bitten on the butt by his own policies. It’s not new, but we need the reminder from time to time that he was gifted a handgun that he’ll likely never be able to take home.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom was gifted a handgun last summer from a conservative podcaster in Tennessee, but his own gun control laws might keep him from ever actually obtaining the “fabulous” gift.
Shawn Ryan gave Newsom a Sig Sauer P365-Xmacro pistol in July, fast forward eight months and the California Governor has yet to actually take possession of the weapon, according to CalMatters.
…
Newsom filed his mandatory statement of economic interest on Monday, where he listed the pistol and wrote in the comments that the gun is “currently held by a licensed firearm dealer, and not in the Governor’s possession.”
The firearm would be Newsom’s first, according to the outlet, but getting it from Tennessee to California is a difficult process — and one gun right activists say will show Newsom firsthand just how tedious it is.
“You would think that maybe he would take a look at that and think ‘Maybe I should do some things differently here, because it’s causing (me) difficulty,’ ” Adam Wilson, the director of legislative affairs at Gun Owners of California, told Cal Matters. “But he doesn’t understand that, because he doesn’t care about what regular gun owners are going through.
If Newsom were to take full ownership of it, he’d have to have it transferred from a Tennessee FFL to a California FFL, fill out all the relevant paperwork, wait 10 days before he could take possession of it, have to go through a mandatory training class and pass with at least a 75, and purchase a state DOJ-approved storage device.
The fact that he hasn’t bothered to do any of that–something that he could easily use as a photo op to “prove” he’s not anti-gun–tells you an awful lot about Newsom.
Either he lied to Shawn Ryan about the gun and his appreciation for the gift and/or his opinion on guns in general, or he knows just how much of a pain in the butt it is and doesn’t want to deal with that.
Or both.
The last thing Newsom wants to do is to show just how big a pain it is, because then it’s hard to push for this kind of thing, particularly on the federal level, and convince Americans that this is just no big deal.
We’re coming up on a year since he was gifted the firearm.
He’s had the time. He just won’t do it, and I bet he’s hoping the rest of us forget all about it.
Never. Gonna. Happen.
Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights, no matter what people like Gavin Newsom claim.
