‘Rock Star’ Snowboard Festival: Breckenridge Welcomes New Shred Event With Art, Music, and More

A new snowboarding event is set to launch in Breckenridge this ski season, coinciding with the town’s legendary Ullr Fest. The Rock Star Energy Open will be held from December 19 to 21 and will include snowboarding competitions, art installations, an “interactive fan village,” and live music — all free for the public.

In 2024, Rockstar Energy launched the Rockstar Open Portland skateboarding event. In August 2025, it featured a huge roster of nearly 100 athletes and bands like Teen Mortgage and The Story So Far. Two years in a row, the Rockstar Open Portland event has drawn big crowds. Now, Rockstar is taking that energy and launching into the world of snowboarding with it.

“We’re excited to bring the Rockstar Energy Open to Breckenridge, a place with such a rich snowboard history,” Steve Mateus, director of sports marketing at Rockstar Energy, said in a press release. “This event represents a new approach that stands apart from traditional snowboard competitions, empowering the next generation of riders, and giving them a stage to show the world what they’re made of.”

Rockstar Energy Open: Go Toe-to-Toe With the Pros

The Rockstar Energy Open will include both men’s and women’s divisions for slopestyle, halfpipe, and big air competitions. Like the Portland event, it will feature elite pros and rising stars like Olympic gold medalist Red Gerard, Steamboat Springs, Colo., native Nik Baden, and X Games gold medalist Iris Pham. Competitors will go full send on a special rider-designed course built by Snow Park Technologies and Breck Terrain Park Crew.

“Growing up riding in Summit County and seeing how the snowboarding community has evolved makes this event even more special,” Red Gerard said in the press release. “It’s going to be awesome competing alongside veterans and rookies and bringing the energy of snowboarding to my home turf.”

More than 60 athletes will compete, 10 of whom will be chosen through the video qualifying series (VQS). If you think you have what it takes, you can ride against some of the biggest names in snowboarding, too.

Just submit your best video parts to the VQS between October 27 and November 23, highlighting your skills. The videos are reviewed by a panel of freestyle snowboarders who select the top 10 riders to compete.

The VQS judges panel will also award cash prizes every week leading up to the event. Awards include the Best Men’s Part, Best Women’s Part, Best Trick, and a Viewer’s Choice Award, for fans to choose their favorite VQS athlete submission. Fans who can’t make it to Breckenridge for the event can livestream it for free on ThePlatfrm.com.

Ullr Fest & Live Music, Too

For over 60 years, Breckridge has celebrated the kickoff to ski season with its annual Ullr Fest. Named after the Norse god of skiers, Ullr Fest has the world’s longest shotski, a parade, and a community bonfire. It’s a celebration of winter stoke that draws huge crowds and lots of energy.

Breckenridge is also reviving its Peaks & Beats Concert Series for the Rockstar Energy Open. Attendees can catch free live music on both Friday and Saturday nights. VIP upgrades are also available for anyone who wants to elevate their Rockstar Open experience.

“Breckenridge has long been at the heart of snowboarding culture, and we’re proud to build on that legacy by hosting the Rockstar Energy Open,” Jon Copeland, chief operating officer of Breckenridge Ski Resort, said. “This event ties together world-class athletes with an incredible mountain experience, defining the future of high-energy mountain event experiences.”
