Surf, Speed, Side-Eyes: Racing Segways With Surfboards in the South Bay of LA

Two surfers. Five towns. One electric ride. Welcome to the South Bay Surf Showdown — part surf competition, part relay, all in the name of glory.
Local favorite Hunter Jones and NorCal contender Dane Anderson face off in this one-of-a-kind competition. Riding two of Segway’s new Xyber e-bikes, the contestants race more than 11 miles up the coast from Torrance to Playa del Rey, stopping at surfing hotspots along the way to complete increasingly difficult challenges.
No matter what the course holds, the Segway Xyber proves its up to the task thanks to its durable frame, robust 20 x 5-inch tires, 110 mm of front suspension, and 100 mm of rear suspension. The e-bike’s 56-mile range lets Jones and Anderson go the distance, while three riding modes — eco, sport, and race — have them covered when every second counts.
From wave snaps and finless 360s to race-walking in wetsuits and a surprising amount of cardio, the showdown is the wholesome, high-quality entertainment we all need. One winner earns bragging rights. One loser walks home. Watch the video to see the chaos unfold and who comes out on top.
