For those who are unfamiliar, the term “schadenfreude” is a German word that means something along the lines of rejoicing in the suffering of others. It’s not something that we should be enjoying on a regular basis, but there are times when I just can’t help myself.
It’s hard not to feel a sense of schadenfreude when someone was a complete and total moron, resulting in them getting shot by police, and now they’re looking at prison for the incident.
And yes, this is nothing but someone being stupid. After all, smart people don’t point BB guns at the police.
On June 4, 2025, 18-year-old Shaun Marlar was pulling on car doors, apparently looking for an unlocked car. Police were called when he was observed in the act. They were called later when someone saw him climbing the fence to a storage facility with what appeared to be a firearm in his hand.
That caller claimed that Marlar pointed the weapon at him.
When police arrived, Marlar was observed with the weapon. Police told him to drop it. Instead, he pointed it at them.
That’s plenty of stupid right there. What made it really stupid, though, was that it was a BB gun.
Apparently, Marlar thought he could intimidate police with weapons drawn by pointing a BB gun at them.
That assumption didn’t work out well for him. Instead, in a case of FAFO, he got shot. While he was in critical condition at one point, he recovered and was able to face charges for his criminal idiocy. That involved the only smart move he could have made. He pled guilty.
Now, let’s understand that BB guns or any other gun-shaped object are close enough to the real thing that most officers aren’t going to recognize it as a fake firearm. They’re going to treat it as the real thing because they don’t have any way to determine it’s not. They can’t get close enough to measure the bore diameter or anything like that.
And armed citizens are no different.
When you point a fake gun at someone, it’s legally the same as pointing a live firearm at them. That means self-defense rules for both private citizens and police officers come into play.
While you might feel awful taking the life of someone who turns out couldn’t have killed you first, the reality is that you can’t know that until afterward. They decided to try to threaten your life with what is essentially a toy. That was their call, not yours. Your call was to protect yourself based on the information you had available at the time. It’s just that simple.
This guy got lit up for being a moron. Now he’s looking at prison on top of medical bills and scar tissue.
If that’s not enough to get someone walking the straight and narrow after they’re released back into society, I don’t know what is. Then again, the criminal mind is a foreign place to most of us who would never even consider such a thing.
