Volkswagen Turns the Page With a New-for-2027 Atlas

Mark it on the map. A new 2027 Volkswagen Atlas has just been unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.

This VW gets smoother sheet metal, a new engine, and new in-cabin tech. All that also comes with the same large interior space and more standard features than before.

Atlas Gets Smoother, Fancier for New Year

The Atlas is VW’s largest SUV, and it’s a big deal for the brand on the sales sheet as well. The company isn’t rocking that boat, so the 2027 Atlas is all-new but also familiar. The body is the same shape, but smoothed out, and with the same wheelbase and the same three large rows of seats.

Under the hood is a 2.0L turbo-four like before, but it too has been massaged. It makes 282 horsepower, 13 more than before, along with 258 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. The towing capacity remains the same, at a healthy-for-the-class 5,000 pounds. There will be a hybrid, but not for at least a few years.

Inside, the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas has gone more upscale. The new dash is loaded with ambient lighting elements, and it has soft-touch materials in more places. The wood trim really comes from trees, and there are three different interior color palettes. You can get fake leather on lower-spec models and Nappa leather at the top.

More Standard Features

Base models get a 12.9-inch center display, while everything else gets a bigger 15-inch screen. Other standard kit includes a power hatch, rear window sunshades, and a nine-speaker stereo. Every model offers at least 12 ways to adjust the seat.

Volkswagen has moved the gear shift to the column to free up space for a pair of wireless phone charging spots. The console also gets a Driver Experience Dial that controls the audio system, drive modes, and even the Atmospheres ambient lighting settings.

The look outside is the same but updated. You won’t mistake this one for any other brand, thanks to its clear family design nose and tail. The light-up VW logos don’t hurt that sense of familiarity, either.

2027 Volkswagen Atlas Arrives This Fall

Safety feature updates include the Travel Assist hands-on highway driving assistant that adds assisted lane changes. It can also pull itself over if the system detects a driver medical emergency. A new center airbag boosts the count of in-cabin inflatables.

Volkswagen hasn’t announced pricing for the 2027 Atlas yet, but we expect it to start slightly higher than the current model’s $39,310 base price (plus destination fee).

There’s also no word yet on the Peak Edition, which added all-terrain tires and extra cladding on the outgoing generation to make it a little more capable on dirt roads. Expect it to return.

The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas will go on sale in the fall, built at the company’s plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. Expect more specs, along with pricing, later in the year.
