Watch ‘¡Ay Chihuahua!’: An Epic Mexican Exploratory Kayak Adventure

Eric Boomer and Ben Stookesberry are proven and legendary explorers, most notably for their whitewater kayak missions to the far corners of the globe. In this short film, presented by the Whitewater brand, they check off some un-paddled gems deep in Mexico.

Not only are they the kayakers and safety crew, but also the film crew on this wild exploratory adventure.

“I never knew such deep spectacular canyons existed in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sinaloa but they really are among one of the most beautiful places on earth. This was a really great adventure and I’m super proud of what Ben Stookesberry and I were able to pull off as a team of two paddling and filming our own adventures along the way,” Eric Boomer said on his Instagram. He goes on to say; “there are also more rivers left to be tackled in this zone.”

Between the snakes, poppy fields, narcos, super-steep canyon walls, big-gradient rivers, and flash flooding, the duo had quite the challenge on this adventure. Along the way, they also encountered amazingly welcoming, kind, and generous people with whom they shared many smiles.

The super deep and steep canyons were littered with continuous steep rapids. While there was loads of danger, much of the rapids ended up being runnable in kayaks, which the expert duo pulled off in style.

A first descent of the Barranca Candameña in the west of Chihuahua, Mexico, was the team’s primary objective. In the end, they pulled off a first descent with a broken boat, great stories to tell, and one impressive short film to remember it by.
