When Mainstrea Media Turns on Anti-Gunners for Preemption Attacks

The mainstream media is unlikely to ever be particularly friendly toward gun rights. There are a small handful of people who work at media outlets outside of relatively small towns who see the Second Amendment as something other than a tool of Satan, but not many.
In your smaller markets, those folks are a lot more common, but one rare thing just about everyone can agree with is that Cleveland isn’t a smaller market.
So, when I came across a piece about a podcast hosted by someone from The Plain Dealer and another from Cleveland.com talking about the Ohio bill that would put some teeth in preemption by allowing citizens to sue cities that try to enact local gun control, I inwardly cringed.
However, as you’ve no doubt read the headline, you’ve already got an inkling that I was surprised. That’s because I was surprised.
Host Chris Quinn noted a parallel occurring on the other side of the political aisle.
“This feels to me like the Democratic version of the Republicans with abortion,” he said. “The Republicans keep trying to whittle away abortion rights even though the rights are enshrined in the Constitution and they should just stop. And even though they don’t like it, Democratic run cities keep trying to impose gun restrictions even though it’s clear they can’t.”
The podcast has regularly called out Ohio Republicans for repeatedly chipping away at abortion protections despite voters enshrining them in the state constitution. Now Quinn is turning the mirror around — arguing that Democratic-led cities doing the exact same thing on gun laws. The law is the law. The Supreme Court has upheld Ohio’s preemption statute. Quinn said cities should just stop until or unless the political landscape changes with regard to guns.
The other host, Lisa Garvin, noted that there was frustration in cities as they try to deal with challenges rural Ohio doesn’t necessarily have, but the fight over preemption is over, and she argues basically that it’s stupid to bang your head against that wall over and over.
Regardless of how you feel on abortion–we are not going there–the parallel to it being the law and having lost over and over again, still trying to chip away at the Second Amendment is pretty accurate, and it’s clear that Quinn doesn’t see a point in local governments doing this at all.
It was…wow.
I doubt either of these two is pro-gun. That’s not how the mainstream media rolls, after all, and while Cleveland isn’t New York, it’s not exactly Small Town, USA, either. This wasn’t what I expected, because Quinn, in particular, pretty much hit the nail on the head. Preemption is the law and the idea that you can keep trying to chip away at it simply by ignoring it is nothing but a waste of everyone’s time.
Neither Quinn nor Garvin is a fan of this mentally deficient strategy, and they’re not siding with the anti-gun local officials who think they can do whatever they want and there should be no repercussions for it. It’s unclear from this if they support the current bill, but it is clear that they aren’t fans of the stupidity that made this new bill necessary.
Now, if only the rest of the mainstream media would wake up about gun rights.
Editor’s Note: President Trump and Republicans across the country are doing everything they can to protect our Second Amendment rights and right to self-defense.
