Toronto sure looks like a rough place these days. Not even by Canadian standards, but ours. Even the U.S. Consulate isn’t safe, as we found out last month.
Yeah, that gun control is going just swimmingly, isn’t it?
However, I apparently need to give the Toronto cops their due. They made two arrests in the incident, which is good. It’s everything else they announced about the arrests that has me scratching my head.
Toronto police announced the arrests Thursday of a 19-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy in the second shooting at the U.S. Consulate in five months, alleging the attack was part of a gun-for-hire network.
The latest shooting in July followed a March 10 attack on the diplomatic mission that also occurred before dawn. Police arrested two people in that case in June. No one was injured in either shooting.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police also opened a parallel investigation, treating the shooting as a national security incident.
Police said they believe the suspects were recruited through an encrypted messaging app and were offered money to open fire on the consulate.
“There has been significant public interest and speculation about who is behind these crimes,” Police Chief Myron Demkiw said. “That remains a key focus of our investigation.”
Police identified the adult suspect as 19-year-old Xen-Ul-Abdeen Syed, who faces multiple firearm, arson and stolen-property charges, as well as a charge of attacking the premises of an internationally protected person. A 15-year-old also was charged but cannot be identified under Canadian law.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this gun-for-hire network. Toronto officials talked about it a while back, and I’m more than a little incredulous at the idea. I mean, this is movie stuff. This doesn’t happen in real life. Next, we’re going to be told that part of the deal is that they livestream the shootings and we end up in the world of Guns Akimbo or something.
It’s ridiculous.
But, on the same note, if they have these two and they admitted it, well…that kind of changes things, doesn’t it?
It still doesn’t tell us all that much about this supposed network, including who is paying these twerps to shoot up Toronto for the lulz or whatever. In other words, its existence being proven doesn’t mean it makes any sense at all.
Then again, if these two deny being part of any network, then my original thoughts still stand. Toronto cops can’t seem to get a handle on the situation, so they’re going to put the blame on some nebulous entity that would be beyond their ability to do anything about in the best of circumstances, and rather than just blame guns from the next province over, they went dystopian.
I could be wrong about that, but without more evidence, I’m not buying this entirely.
What matters more in the here and now is that the two dipsticks who allegedly shot at our consulate have apparently been arrested. They’ll get a day in court, and we’ll find out a lot more about whatever is going on then. Assuming they don’t just plead out and everything gets kept under wraps. I hope they don’t, because if this network is real, I want to know about it.
