Don’t Fool Yourself About Guns Turned into Ploughshares Actually Doing Anything

I’m a firm believer in you being able to do with your property as you wish, so long as you don’t harm anyone else. If you want to paint your house puke green and mount peacocks on your roof gables, so be it. I’m not interested in stopping you, though I might try to talk you out of it. So, if someone wants to take gun parts and turn them into gardening tools, whatever.

In fact, part of me would actually buy some of those, just so I can talk about what my hoe had been chambered in. Make some woodworking tools out of them, and I’ll joke about how my hammer can shoot nails.

Yeah, it’s kind of dumb, but if people want to give up their property and others want to turn that property into garden tools, whatever.

Just don’t fool yourself that this will address anything other than a lack of garden tools made out of gun parts.

In April, in commemoration of Earth Month, the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah, or GVPC Utah, hosted a “Guns to Gardens” forging demonstration at an on-campus garden at the University of Utah.

The event, with blacksmiths doing the honors, showed how guns can be recycled into garden tools — turning the stock and barrel of a rifle, for example, into the handle and head of a perfectly functional shovel.

But beyond demonstrating another way to help conserve the Earth, GVPC Utah’s much larger motive is to help conserve us humans.

Year in, year out, too many of us die by gunshots. Worse, too many of us die because the person who pulled the trigger is the person who owns the gun.

In the hopes of preserving lives, GVPC Utah’s role, with Guns to Gardens and various other programs, is to draw attention to that fact.

Literally nothing this effort does will change anything. These are guns that people opted to turn in during some buyback event, which are then repurposed into gardening tools. They’re not the guns of people who are considering taking their own lives, and it’s not the guns of people who are willing to take others.

Perhaps the only part of this that accomplishes anything is that they claim to take people who have been impacted by so-called gun violence and teach them blacksmithing. As craftwork of any kind can do a lot for the mind, teaching them how to make things with a hammer and fire might take some who would go down that dark path of violence and give them something a bit more positive to do, so yeah, they get props for that.

But using gun parts is nothing more than a marketing gimmick they use to get articles written about themselves and to tie themselves with anti-gun groups who will trip over themselves to do anything that smacks of taking guns “off the streets,” even though buybacks–the backbone of this entire thing, the source of the raw materials used to make these tools–have been shown time and time again to do nothing to reduce violence, even by suicide.

Do what you want to do, but don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ve done good in the world when you’re not.
