Gun Owners Could Play Key Role in KY-4 Outcome

Little did I know back in November when I wrote about Thomas Massie’s staunch support of the Second Amendment that six months later, a Trump-backed primary candidate’s supporters would be trying to push claims that Massie is anti-gun and “always votes with Democrats.” My guess is that when every previous attempt to defame and disgrace one of the most “fiscally conservative” and “common sense’ based political figures in Washington D.C. fails to generate momentum, opposing campaign staff was forced to keep going down the list of traditional GOP platform items
Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you’re probably aware of the latest political theatre centered on Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, whose voters head to the polls on May 19, 2026, for the Republican primary. Incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie faces a Trump-endorsed challenger, retired Navy SEAL, and farmer Ed Gallrein. While both candidates claim to support gun rights, some Second Amendment groups are highlighting what they see as key differences
The National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) highlighted their concerns in a recent article titled “Ed Gallrein’s Gun Control Pledge Sparks Backlash Among Kentucky Gun Owners,” noting that such language echoes establishment Republicans who reassure anti-gun moderates instead of demanding full restoration of rights.
Gallrein has publicly pledged to “enforce the laws on the books” regarding firearms, a statement that gun owners interpret as acceptance of existing restrictions, while Massie has compiled one of the strongest, most consistent pro-Second Amendment records in Congress. For voters who prioritize constitutional carry, repeal of infringing laws, and opposition to federal gun control, the choice could not be clearer.
Gallrein’s position first drew scrutiny during his 2024 campaign for Kentucky state office. In response to a questionnaire on gun policy, he stated: “We need to enforce the laws on the books and make sure that Kentuckians who seek to protect themselves and their family, as well as provide food, can do so without interference from the government. I’m a lifelong member of the NRA and believe our rights should not be infringed upon.” On its face, the comment sounds reasonable. But to NAGR, “enforce the laws on the books” signals willingness to uphold Kentucky’s lingering restrictions; NICS-style background checks, restaurant carry limitations, and carve-outs in the state’s constitutional carry law.
Concerns deepened when Gallrein declined to complete NAGR’s candidate survey for the congressional race. The questionnaire posed direct questions on expanded background checks, federal “gun-free school zones,” and national constitutional carry legislation—core issues for pro-gun voters. Gallrein also refused multiple debate invitations from Massie, including events hosted by Kentucky Educational Television and local forums. Critics argue this avoidance suggests an unwillingness to defend his record under scrutiny. As the NAGR piece observed, “If a candidate truly supports the Second Amendment, why avoid answering basic questions about gun rights?” Gallrein’s campaign website touts him as a “lifelong defender of freedom” and “pro-Second Amendment” warrior, yet his past comments and refusal to engage leave many Kentucky gun owners skeptical.
In stark contrast, Rep. Thomas Massie has repeatedly proven himself the one of the most pro-Second Amendment member of Congress through legislative action, not rhetoric. As co-chair of the House Second Amendment Caucus since reestablishing it in 2016, Massie has led the fight against federal overreach. He has introduced the National Constitutional Carry Act multiple times (most recently H.R. 645 in 2025), which would ensure Americans’ right to carry firearms in public spaces is recognized nationwide without state-by-state permission slips. He authored the Safe Students Act (H.R. 7415) to repeal the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990, arguing that one-size-fits-all bans leave children defenseless. Massie also reintroduced the Second Amendment For Every Registrable Voter Act (SAFER Voter Act), eliminating the federal prohibition on 18- to 20-year-olds purchasing handguns from licensed dealers—restoring rights stripped by prior gun control measures.
Massie’s voting record matches his sponsorships. He has opposed every major gun control package, including the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the so-called Protecting Our Kids Act (H.R. 7910), and the Assault Weapons Ban (H.R. 1808). He has blocked executive actions targeting ammunition and pistol braces, demanded ATF clarification on rules that infringe on lawful ownership, and warned against “fix-NICS” expansions that erode due process. Gun Owners of America routinely awards him near perfect or perfect scores, while Heritage Action and other conservative scorecards praise his consistent opposition to restrictions (though the National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund gives him a “B” rating, and has declined to endorse either Massie or Gallrein in Tuesday’s primary). Massie has explicitly stated that the Second Amendment exists not just for hunting or sport but to deter tyranny—an uncompromising view rare in Washington.
The contrast extends beyond policy to temperament. Massie engages critics openly, publishes detailed explanations of his votes, and invites constituents to read the bills themselves. Gallrein, backed by outside groups and the president, has largely leaned on endorsements and veteran credentials while dodging substantive 2A dialogue.
Will Massie’s support for the Second Amendment be rewarded at the polls during Tuesday’s primary, or will President Trump’s campaign to replace him be as successful as similar efforts targeting Indiana Republicans who voted against redistricting and Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy have been?
Kentucky’s gun owners have long valued self-reliance and skepticism of government. The Bluegrass State’s own constitutional carry law passed despite establishment hesitation, thanks to grassroots pressure. Yet Gallrein’s 2024 comments and current campaign silence risk signaling that he views the Second Amendment as negotiable—something to be “managed” rather than expanded. His refusal to debate Massie only amplifies doubts. As one activist noted in the NAGR coverage, “Kentucky gun owners are paying very close attention”, and they could be a key factor in determining the winner in KY-4.
