Hawaiian Law Firm Making Free Gun-Free Zone Signs for Businesses

The Wolford decision, contrary to what the media would have you believe, did not say businesses couldn’t prohibit guns on their property. Quite the contrary, actually, and this is entirely consistent with the application of rights on private property in the United States since before the United States was the United States. The assumption is that you have your totality of rights and can exercise them freely unless told otherwise.

The thing is, businesses have to actually tell people. The state can’t decide that for them and force some to opt out.

Now, a law firm in Hawaii, which lost Wolford, is printing up free gun-free zone signs.

Hawaii law firm Davis Levin Livingston has partnered with the gun control group Brady: United Against Gun Violence to offer free signs for businesses that decide to keep guns off their property.

“If they’re going to walk into a building that has a prohibited sign, you know, they’ll have to leave their guns in the car. So hopefully it will do something to advance the safety of our community,” said Mark Davis, founding partner of Davis Levin Livingston.

Davis added that it’s “now up to all of us to exercise our right to maintain gun-free premises.”

“It is no coincidence that Hawaii has long had some of the nation’s strongest gun safety laws and lowest rates of gun violence,” said Erin Davis, senior counsel and director of litigation at Brady. “Most residents believe businesses should be able to remain gun-free, and putting up a sign makes that happen and keeps our community safe.”

Of course, strong gun laws sure as hell ain’t helping Washington state, but sure, you guys live with that delusion.

Here’s the thing that Davis and company don’t grasp. A lot of us honestly don’t care. Yes, we think it’s BS that you want to tell us we can’t carry our guns in various businesses, especially because the bad guys won’t pay any attention to the signs. We know you’re not actually advancing safety in your community. We know all that.

We just don’t care because you’re doing all of us a favor.

Anyone who puts that sign up at the door is telling you that they want you to be vulnerable to being attacked, not just inside their establishment, but also on the way to and from your car. They want you to be in a position to be a victim, and do you really want to give money to people who are willing to allow you to be hurt simply because they think a law-abiding citizen with a lawfully carried firearm is icky?

“We’re going to tell you to keep guns out of our businesses!”

K. We’ll just go to your competitor who simply doesn’t give a damn one way or the other, which is an improvement over your own misguided bigotry toward a fundamental right.

But Wolford said, explicitly, that you can put up a sign if you want, and we’re expected to respect that.

Run off customers if you want. That, too, is a fundamental right. It’s just too bad that gun ownership in Hawaii isn’t enough to tank literally every business that does it.
