Groups like Moms Demand Action–which sounds more like an adult film studio as opposed to a gun control group–present themselves as the American mothers’ political voice on guns and so-called gun violence. When they speak, the media often frames it as mothers calling for a particular bill to be passed.
Like, say, Connecticut’s recently passed bill banning Glocks.
The problem here is that they don’t speak for all mothers. A lot of mothers have very good reasons to disagree.
On a bustling March day at the Capitol, Elizabeth Miller sat in front of a microphone to testify against the “Glock switch” bill, a bill banning the sale of certain types of pistols manufactured after October 2026.
The bill, which passed, was designed to incentivize the gun’s manufacturers to redesign their product to make it more difficult to convert into an automatic pistol.
For Miller, this bill was concerning. Although the bill won’t force people to give up guns they already own, the new ban will affect the availability of Glock pistols — Miller’s preferred choice of weapon.
“I have carried a Glock since I was 21 years old, so for over 17 years now. As a woman, I rely on Glocks to protect myself and my three kids,” she said.
Miller went on to say that, although a physically small person, she could conceal a smaller model with relative ease. They are reliable, affordable and user-friendly, she said.
“I can’t stress the fact enough, as a woman, that some guns can be intimidating,” she said.

Holly Sullivan, the president of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, and a single mom of a 10-year-old daughter, said she sees firearms as a means of female empowerment.
“ We don’t necessarily need to depend on a husband or whatever for a variety of different things — and self-defense is just another one of those things,” Sullivan said.
The truth of the matter is that women are buying more guns today than ever before. They’re learning how to shoot, and they’re learning how to defend themselves, because they need to learn how to do it themselves. Hell, even if they’ve got a husband who is genuinely willing to die protecting them, which I hope includes most of the family men reading this, no person can be everywhere and do everything. Sometimes, you need to handle business yourself.
And Glock makes models that are rather ideal for many women, especially those who don’t really feel comfortable with some of the options out there. Now, in Connecticut, those models are going to be banned for everyone, but especially for those who would have benefited from them the most.
A lot of women see it. They feel it. They know it.
But the media doesn’t frame them as the mothers. It doesn’t even hint that these women even exist, much less matter.
What Connecticut just passed is moronic. There’s no doubt about that, and there are plenty of villains out there to point fingers at for the state doing something so stupid.
The media, however, is a lot more villainous than most of them because they’ve forgotten their purpose, misrepresented a particular group as being the voice of all women, and then largely ignored those women who disagree with a particular proposal or why they disagree.
President Trump caught a lot of flak for saying that the media was the enemy.
I think he should have caught more flak for not taking a harsher stance.
