On Tuesday, I wrote about the deadly attack in Montreal. Since I wrote that, we’ve learned more about what happened, and I swear, just the Not The Bee post on X about it was unhinged…and completely factual. Were it not for the loss of life, it would be hilarious.
In that piece, I noted that I expected the calls for gun control to come.
Part of me hoped that anti-gun hysterics would wait until all the facts came in, but I wasn’t about to hold my breath. What I knew in my bones was that, as with every other high-profile shooting anywhere on the planet, some people’s first reaction would be to call for more gun control.
While that wasn’t actually a prophetic stretch, I still sometimes hate it when I’m right.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada called for stricter gun control in Canada Tuesday in the wake of Monday’s shooting in Côte-des-Neiges that left a police officer, a civilian and the suspected shooter dead.

The former Liberal member of Parliament for Hochelaga supported federal gun control legislation during her time in Parliament.
“How can we do better in the future to prevent something like this?” Martinez Ferrada said Tuesday.
The mayor referenced the Dec. 6, 1989, École Polytechnique massacre that left 14 women dead and another 14 people injured, in a misogynistic, antifeminist attack.
“Even people that lived through Polytechnique will tell you that I think we can go further,” Martinez Ferrada said.

“I know it’s difficult because guns sometimes are … in many areas for hunting, for Indigenous communities. But in a city like Montreal, we need to have a better control of what’s happening in the street in terms of gun control.”

She questioned how someone could just start shooting people in the street.

“We have to fight back against people’s ability to own guns and use them in the streets in this manner,” Martinez Ferrada said in French.

“We don’t believe that there’s any room for people to use guns in a city like Montreal.”
Really? No room for people to use guns in a city like Montreal? None whatsoever?
It seems to me that some additional good guys with guns on that particular street might have handled the threat a bit sooner and saved at least two lives.
Look, I get questioning how someone could just start shooting people in the middle of a city for no reason. My questions stem from my inability to comprehend how someone could bring themselves to kill perfect strangers for so little reason. The problem isn’t the gun, nor the fact that people in Montreal are allowed to own guns. The problem is that there is a person with so little regard for human life that they’d lash out at perfect strangers like that.
But no, Ferrada wants to attack what remains of Canadians’ gun rights.
Then again, it seems she has other rights she’s not fond of.
Martinez Ferrada was critical of the numerous “very graphic” videos of the shootings posted on social media after the attacks.

“It desensitizes,” the mayor said in French. “We can’t accept that. As a society we need to be respectful and make sure that we are also (protecting) the dignity of the police officer we saw yesterday and the family that had to see those images.”
Yeah, since one of those videos appears to show one of her officers panicking and killing an innocent man just trying to get away from the shooter, I suspect that’s the real reason she doesn’t want people to see those videos. She can’t “accept” those videos being out there, which sure seems interesting since freedom of speech and freedom of the press are still, technically, a thing in Canada.
It just goes to show you that, yet again, find a gun-grabber and scratch a bit and you’ll find an authoritarian who really just wants to rule you.
